Amid ongoing accusations of \u201ctransphobia,\u201d \u201cHarry Potter\u201d author J.K. Rowling has received support from an unlikely source \u2014 gender-fluid UK comedia<\/a>n Eddie Izzard. <\/p>\n

Izzard \u2014 who recently revealed that she identifies with \u201cshe\/her\u201d<\/a> pronouns \u2014 has come out in defense of Rowling amid the controversy, which began when the fantasy novelist was slammed by transgender activists for tweets mocking an article that used the phrase \u201cpeople who menstruate\u201d instead of \u201cwomen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think J.K.\u00a0Rowling is transphobic,\u201d Izzard, 58, told the Telegraph<\/a>, adding that \u201cwe need to look at the things she has written about in her blog.\u201d <\/p>\n

The \u201cHannibal\u201d star was referring to an essay the \u201cFantastic Beasts\u201d scribe posted on her website in June in which she defended her aforementioned comments. In the lengthy piece, Rowling, 55, wrote, \u201cI refuse to bow down to a movement that I believe is doing demonstrable harm in seeking to erode \u2018woman\u2019 as a political and biological class and offering cover to predators like few before it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Izzard seemed to agree, somewhat. \u201cWomen have been through such hell over history,\u201d the comic told the Telegraph. \u201cTrans people have been invisible, too. I hate the idea we are fighting between ourselves, but it\u2019s not going to be sorted with the wave of a wand.\u201d <\/p>\n

The avid marathon runner added, \u201cI don\u2019t have all the answers. If people disagree with me, fine, but why are we going through hell on this?\u201d<\/p>\n

Izzard isn\u2019t the only UK entertainer who has flocked to Rowling\u2019s defense of late. Fellow comedian John Cleese defended his public support of the billionaire in November, tweeting, \u201cI\u2019m afraid I\u2019m not that interested in trans folks.\u201d<\/p>\n

They represent a minority in a Hollywood that has been largely been critical of the writer\u2019s stance on gender, and has included \u201cHarry Potter\u201d actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and\u00a0Eddie Redmayne<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey [trans people] simply want to live their lives peacefully, and it\u2019s time to let them do so,\u201d said Redmayne, who portrayed a transgender woman in 2015\u2019s Oscar-nominated \u201cThe Danish Girl.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n
