\n The man who died after trying to protect an off-duty cop during an attack in a Manhattan subway station was a kind local doorman \u2014 who had foiled another mugging just weeks earlier, his sister told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe used to take care of the super\u2019s dog.\u201d Lourdes Calderon, 57, said of sibling Angel Calderon, 54. \u201cHe used to take care of tenants\u2019 cats. There\u2019s one person whose son has autism and couldn\u2019t be home on time and Angel said, \u2018Don\u2019t worry. I\u2019ll take him wherever he needs to go and wait for him and bring him back.\u2019 He was very helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Angel, who lived in New Jersey and worked as a doorman at a building on West End Avenue, acted as a good Samaritan late Monday night when he chased and then held down a maniac who allegedly punched a 23-year-old cop in the face repeatedly and grabbed her purse on a No. 1 station at West 86th Street and Broadway.<\/p>\n

After attacking the cop, the brute emptied her purse on the train and fled into the station.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s when Angel ran into him.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was coming out of work and went down to take the train and he was in the middle of a mugging,\u201d Lourdes said. \u201cI don\u2019t think he knew that that was a police officer that was being mugged. He was just helping somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe police came, they got the person and everything was fine,\u201d she continued \u201cSo he said \u2018OK, now I\u2019m going home.\u2019 So he takes the 1 train to go to 59th St. to switch over to the D but he never made it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Angel was found dead on the train at 72nd Street and Broadway.<\/p>\n

Lourdes said officials told her she won\u2019t receive a cause of death for weeks or longer because of a backlog of COVID-19 deaths. She believes that even though he had no health problems, he may have had a heart attack because of a family history. Her dad had one.<\/p>\n

The alleged robber, Percy Freeman, stands 6-foot-1 and weighs 240 pounds, according to the city\u2019s Department of Correction website.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure the running was too much for him and the holding down,\u201d Lourdes said. \u201cHe was kind and very giving. It makes you wonder: was it worth it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Lourdes said her brother had just started taking that<\/em> train because he was nearly robbed on another line about two weeks ago, but foiled the attempt when he threw a water bottle in his attacker\u2019s face, his sister said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother told him, \u2018Don\u2019t take that train anymore, take the 1 train,\u2019\u201d Lourdes recalled. \u201cThen this happ<\/a>ens!\u201d<\/p>\n

Lourdes said her and siblings were already mourning a 55-year-old sister who died from the coronavirus a month earlier and that the remaining family members are setting up a GoFundMe site for her brother\u2019s funeral.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m surprised the cop he helped didn\u2019t reach out to us,\u201d Lourdes said. \u201cI\u2019m not blaming anybody. He could have died at home. We just want to give him a proper burial.\u201d<\/p>\n

Freeman, 43, was arrested after the attack and charged with robbery. A judge set his bail at $25,000 bail Tuesday night and he was sent to Rikers Island.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
