It\u2019s not the plot of\u00a0Ready Player Two<\/em> \u2013 it\u2019s real. Tye Sheridan<\/strong>, who played Wade Watts in Steven Spielberg\u2019s bombastic\u00a0Ready Player One<\/em> adaptation, is sticking with digital worlds via\u00a0Wonder Dynamics<\/strong>, a company he co-founded with\u00a0visual-effects artist Nikola Todorovic<\/strong>. The company\u2019s goal is to allow indie filmmakers to create huge, blockbuster-worthy VFX on a much lower budget.<\/p>\n

The news<\/a> of Wonder Dynamics comes from Variety<\/a>, who report that Tye Sheridan and Nikola Todorovic have spent the last four years \u201cquietly experimenting with using artificial intelligence and machine learning to create interactive video app<\/a>lications,\u201d and that the duo is \u201cgearing up to introduce a new AI production tool that they promise will let independent artists produce dazzling VFX and CGI animations for far less than is required today.\u201d
\nThe team has an impressive advisory board to back their work up: Sheridan\u2019s\u00a0Ready Player One<\/em> director Steven<\/strong>\u00a0Spielberg<\/strong>; filmmaker Joe Russo<\/strong>; Rhea Films\u2019 Terry Dougas<\/strong>; Film Finances president Gregory Trattner<\/strong>; Joshua Baer<\/strong>, founder and CEO of Capital Factory; Angjoo Kanazawa<\/strong>, an assistant professor at UC Berkeley and Google research scientist; MIT professor Antonio Torralba,<\/strong> who is the head of AI and decision making; and private-equity investor Robert Schwab<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Wonder Dynamics] breaks down the barriers to achieving your wildest vision,\u201d Sheridan said. \u201cA lot of times people dream up this story but it\u2019s not possible to make because it would cost $200 million. AI can democratize VFX.\u201d Joe Russo added: \u201cWe are often reminded of all of the ways that AI and similar tech advancements will profoundly impact our lives, but I think we haven\u2019t yet scratched the surface of its potential impact on the media<\/a> industry. Wonder Dynamics is one of the early startups exploring this intersection, and I look forward to being part of this exciting journey with them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The company is offering two different products:\u00a0Wallace Interactive, \u201ca patented technology<\/a> that lets viewers engage in AI-powered conversations with characters in a TV show or a movie,\u201d and Wallace PROduction, which \u201cwill expedite and reduce the cost of creating visual effects.\u201d Sheridan stressed that they weren\u2019t trying to make current VFX artists and their techniques obsolete: \u201cA lot of people are going to ask us, \u2018Does this mean VFX artists are going to be out of jobs?\u2019 The truth is, it will streamline [the process] \u2014 it will create a bunch of new jobs for artists and engineers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over the years, advances in technology have allowed filmmakers to do some great work with minimal equipment. The best example of this might be Steven Soderbergh, who has already made multiple movies<\/a> shot with an iPhone \u2013 as was Sean Baker\u2019s excellent film Tangerine<\/em>. Of course, it\u2019s worth remembering that most tools are only as good as the people wielding them, so in the end, Wonder Dynamics\u2019 products will live and die by the talent of the people employing them.<\/p>\n
