Over the holiday, around 44 million households tuned into Robert Rodriguez<\/strong>\u2018s We Can be Heroes<\/em><\/strong>, making the new family superhero movie\u00a0one of Netflix\u2019s biggest hits. And all those parents who plopped their kids in front of the spiritual sequel to Rodriguez\u2019s\u00a0Sharkboy and Lavagirl<\/em> for just two hours of peace and quiet can look forward to another kid-friendly sequel from the filmmaker. Yes,\u00a0We Can Be Heroes<\/em> is getting a sequel.<\/p>\n

Netflix announced Monday that a\u00a0We Can Be Heroes<\/em> sequel is already in development from writer-director Robert Rodriguez, following the family film\u2019s stellar debut, which saw it become the streamer\u2019s biggest holiday hit.<\/p>\n

According to the streamer,\u00a044 million households viewed\u00a0We Can Be Heroes\u00a0<\/em>in the movie\u2019s first days on the service, shattering Netflix\u2019s records for Christmas week \u2014 the period from December 25 to December 31. You can imagine all the tired parents, who just wanted a little bit of respite from their over-caffeinated kids, either rejoicing or groaning at this news (depending on how many times their little tykes rewatched\u00a0We Can Be Heroes<\/em>).<\/p>\n

But you know, Rodriguez may be on to something. I always enjoy when a filmmaker known for violent, gritty fare ventures over to the family-friendly side and churns out a couple of bangers. As part of the generation that grew up on\u00a0Spy Kids<\/em>, I have an affection on Rodriguez\u2019s dedication to the family-friendly action flick, and app<\/a>reciate that he\u2019s keeping it going for the generations long after me.<\/p>\n

We Can Be Heroes<\/em> saw the return\u00a0of\u00a0Taylor Dooley<\/strong>\u00a0as Lava Girl and\u00a0JJ Dashnaw<\/strong>\u00a0taking over as Sharkboy, with a host of parental superheroes played by\u00a0Pedro Pascal<\/strong>,\u00a0Christian Slater<\/strong>,\u00a0Boyd Holbrook<\/strong>, and a\u00a0villain played by\u00a0Priyanka Chopra Jonas<\/strong>.
\nYaya Gosselin<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0stars as the young leader of these super powered kids, each with their own unique abilities, which include super elasticity, manipulating time, seeing the future, and of course, shark strength. The rest of the cast includes\u00a0Vivien Lyra Blair<\/strong>,\u00a0Isaiah Russell-Bailey<\/strong>,\u00a0Akira Akbar<\/strong>,\u00a0Lyon Daniels<\/strong>,\u00a0Nathan Blair<\/strong>,\u00a0Lotus Blossom, Hala Finley<\/strong>,\u00a0Andy Walken<\/strong>,\u00a0Dylan Henry Lau<\/strong>,\u00a0Andrew Diaz<\/strong>,\u00a0Sung Kang<\/strong>,\u00a0Haley Reinhart<\/strong>,\u00a0J. Quinton Johnson<\/strong>,\u00a0Brittany Perry-Russell<\/strong>, and\u00a0Brently Heilbron<\/strong>. There\u2019s no news on whether the entire cast will reprise their roles in the sequel.<\/p>\n

When alien invaders kidnap Earth\u2019s superheroes, their kids are whisked away to a government safe house. But whip-smart tween Missy Moreno (Yaya Gosselin) will stop at nothing to rescue her superhero dad, Marcus Moreno (Pedro Pascal). Missy teams up with the rest of the superkids to escape their mysterious government babysitter, Ms. Granada (Priyanka Chopra Jonas). If they\u2019re going to save their parents, they\u2019ll have to work together by using their individual powers \u2014 from elasticity to time control to predicting the future \u2014 and form an out-of-this-world team.
