The mystery over Jack Ma\u2019s whereabouts continued on Tuesday with a new report claiming that the tech billionaire understands that he \u201cran afoul\u201d of the government in China and is choosing to stay out of the spotlight as a result.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s not showing up, but he\u2019s not missing,\u201d David Faber reported on CNBC<\/a>, citing a source with knowledge of the situation. \u201cHe hasn\u2019t been captured. He hasn\u2019t been taken.\u201d<\/p>\n

The report didn\u2019t provide many details about Ma\u2019s whereabouts \u2014 and doesn\u2019t app<\/a>ear to have quelled speculation that the 56-year-old founder of Alibaba and one of the richest people in China is being punished for a speech he gave in October that was highly critical of Chinese financial regulators. <\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Laying low\u2019 has many meanings in Chinese. The most common is \u2018house arrest\u2019,\u201d one critic wrote<\/a> on Twitter<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The CCP approves this message,\u201d another person wrote<\/a>, referring to the Chinese Communist party. <\/p>\n

Ma \u2014 worth an estimated $59 billion, according to Forbes \u2014 \u00a0has not been seen since he made the speech in Shanghai attacking Beijing finance officials. <\/p>\n

He even skipped the final episode of an \u201cApprentice\u201d-style TV show he created called \u201cAfrica\u2019s Business Heroes,\u201d where he is a judge, which set tongues wagging, according to the Financial Times. <\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s financial system is the legacy of the Industrial Age,\u201d Ma declared in the now infamous speech. \u201cWe must set up a new one for the next generation and young people. We must reform the current system.\u201d<\/p>\n

Within days of making the remarks, China regulators scrapped a planned IPO of fintech firm Ant Group, where Ma is the controlling shareholders. His e-commerce firm Alibaba has also been hit with an antitrust investigation. <\/p>\n

On Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that China\u2019s regulators are now seeking to force Ant Group to share troves of consumer-credit data<\/a> it has collected. Officials have also reportedly been seeking to shrink Ma\u2019s empire and potentially take a larger stake in his businesses. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear when Ma might remerge and CNBC on Tuesday reported that it could be awhile. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe is being less visible purposefully, and you can expect that will continue to be the case for some time,\u201d Faber said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
