\n Sebastian Zurita knows a thing or two about \u201cHow to Survive Being Single\u201d \u2014 the American title of his new Spanish-language ensemble comedy (\u201cComo Sobrevivir Soltero\u201d) premiering Friday on Amazon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis comes from a guy who\u2019s been single for eight years,\u201d says the Mexican-born Zurita, 33, who stars in the series<\/a>. \u201cThe original idea came from a trip<\/a> to the beach I went on with a group of friends I knew since kindergarten. One of my friends was extremely obnoxious. He was getting us into lots of trouble and by the end of the weekend our reality was much different than our expectations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t catch anything but a cold.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 10-episode series, subtitled in English, was co-created by Zurita and his brother, Emiliano (who\u2019s also an actor). It centers around Sebastian Ybarra (Zurita), a washed-up Mexican actor who\u2019s been dating onetime co-star Lucia (Pamela Almanza) for 10 years. The series opens with an extremely nervous Sebastian proposing to Lucia on national TV. It does not go well.<\/p>\n

The humiliated Sebastian, a sensitive romantic at heart, enters the dating scene \u2014 and everything that entails vis a vis social media<\/a> \u2014 while taking (mostly unwanted) advice from his close group of off-the-wall friends: Fish (Fabrizio Santini), Gonzo (Octavio Hinojosa), Fabiana (Tato Alexander), Mafer (Lucia Gomez-Robledo) and Daniel (Roberto Flores).<\/p>\n

\u201cFriendship is another type of relationship, and we wanted to explore these guys who\u2019ve been together so long \u2014 and the reason behind them being in their 30s and still being such close friends,\u201d Zurita says. \u201cThey\u2019re completely opposite sides of the coin [from Sebastian] but they balance each other out. There was a lot of debate in the writers\u2019 room that it wasn\u2019t believable \u2014 that no one in their 30s spends all that time together with each other \u2014 but what if they did? There\u2019s a different language spoken with a group of friends, the way they communicate. I wanted to create that bond.\u201d<\/p>\n

The group\u2019s chemistry is app<\/a>arent on-screen, though Zurita, a veteran of Mexican soaps and the big screen, says he didn\u2019t know any of his co-stars heading into the series, which was shot in Mexico City.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe casting process was intense,\u201d he says. \u201cIt took almost five months, which is almost unheard-of in Mexico. Me and my brother were in every single casting session \u2026 and for this show is was really important that the chemistry [between the cast] would be believable. Some of the actors went through eight or nine callbacks. We took everyone bowling and got drunk together for one day. We had a lot of rehearsals, which you really don\u2019t have in Mexican television.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s Sebastian, though, who\u2019s the main protagonist around which Season 1 revolves \u2014 and Zurita says his journey will be both unpredictable and humorous as he searches for true love.<\/p>\n

\u201cViewers are in for a surprise,\u201d he says. \u201cThe show has so many moments where you don\u2019t know what\u2019s really happening \u2026 we get really weird and the plot twists mess with every character. It\u2019s insane how much work went into that.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut more than that, the jokes needed to be character-driven,\u201d he says. \u201cSebastian is going through an emotional rollercoaster and the idea is that, \u2018OK, he\u2019s broken-hearted but wants to get over it\u2019 \u2014 and throughout the season he\u2019s trying all these techniques: the old romantic way, social media, taking a course on how to meet women. He\u2019s realizing that even though his friends have his best interests at heart, he\u2019s not them.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes you\u2019re not ready to find true love yet and he\u2019s rushing into the wrong things.\u201d<\/p>\n

And, Zurita says, it was important for \u201cHow to Survive Being Single\u201d to reflect the 2020 dating scene.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had six writers on the show, three women and three men, and we wanted to confront the ideas of what men think women want and vice versa, and what\u2019s happening in real life in the MeToo era and approaching that with a really dark sense of humor.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like, \u2018We\u2019re so progressive\u2019 \u2014 but are we really<\/em> there yet, or not?\u201d\n <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
