“#Netflix’s ‘Surviving Death’ explores afterlife, near-death experiences<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Mary Neal \u201cdied\u201d by drowning in a 1999 kayaking accident \u2014 and two decades later, her shocking experience surviving the incident still stuns the scientific community.<\/p>\n

Neal, now 62, was pinned underwater beneath her overturned boat for 30 minutes before friends rescued her. There\u2019s no explanation for how she was able to be resuscitated and avoid brain damage.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a physician and a scientist and as someone who\u2019s very concrete-thinking and pragmatic, I, too, would have rolled my eyes if I had heard my own story,\u201d Neal told The Post from her home in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where she has a private practice.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Neal\u2019s harrowing account \u2014 along with several others \u2014 is dramatized and explored in Netflix\u2019s new docuseries<\/a> \u201cSurviving Death,\u201d premiering Wednesday.<\/p>\n

During the half-hour that she was submerged, Neal claimed she looked down on her body from a vantage point above it and felt herself travel<\/a> to a place that she describes as heaven, where she encountered spirits of her departed ancestors and time seemed to slow down. There, the \u201cspirits\u201d informed her that her son would die, although they didn\u2019t say when or how.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Neal was already a medical doctor at the time, and she described herself as \u201cculturally Christian\u201d in a casual way. But she emerged from her ordeal more spiritual and now refers to herself as a \u201cchild of God.\u201d Still, she sees no conflict between her scientific training as a spine surgeon and her religious beliefs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI spent many months [after the event] trying to come up with some sort of medical or scientific explanation, because I was told that my oldest son would die. And so I was very motivated to find a reasonable explanation that could allow me to discount everything,\u201d said the mother of three. <\/p>\n

In 2009, her oldest son, Willie, was hit by a car and killed<\/a> at age 20.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Neal\u2019s story of looking down on her body and encountering some type of spiritual world is common among people who have near-death experiences, according to \u201cSurviving Death.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cPeople who have had the medical definition of death \u2014 flatlining \u2014 and are able to be brought back with the advent of resuscitative medicine have had these extraordinary experiences that are not unique,\u201d said series director and producer Ricki Stern.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you think about people exploring the possibility of life after death or consciousness outside the body, we tend to think of these woo-woo shows like \u2018Ghost Hunters\u2019 or \u2018Long Island Medium,\u2019 \u201d Stern added. \u201cSo having this deep-dive of doctors who are studying this cast a different lens with which to look at this possibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

The series is based on a book of the same name<\/a> by investigative journalist Leslie Kean.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel pretty confident after writing my book to make the statement that I do not believe that consciousness is limited to the physical brain,\u201d Kean told The Post. \u201cSo if that\u2019s the case, could it survive the death of the physical brain? There\u2019s a lot of suggestive evidence that it can. We can\u2019t provide hardcore answers, but we can show what it\u2019s like for people to go on this journey.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the years since her near-death experience, Neal has studied common theories for it such as the hypothesis that a lack of oxygen to the brain causes hallucinations that produce \u201cafterlife\u201d sensations. She says she does not find merit in them. <\/p>\n

She compares studying the afterlife to studying love.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you look at love, for example, we can study it scientifically and see the consequences of love, but we can\u2019t \u2018prove\u2019 love. It\u2019s a different axis and a different concept,\u201d she said. \u201cScience<\/a> and spirituality coexist easily, because they address different parts of our existence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even so, whether or not they can be scientifically proven, Neal and Kean both said that stories of the afterlife \u2014 and the fact that many people have similar anecdotes \u2014 can\u2019t be discounted.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you want to talk about scientific study and proving that there is life after death \u2014 I would put forth that it\u2019s already been proven,\u201d said Neal, referring to anecdotal evidence that spans time and cultures. <\/p>\n

\u201cI do think science will make strides in terms of trying to understand how it happ<\/a>ens. But proving that there is continuation of consciousness, frankly, I think has already been done.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are no straight answers, and that\u2019s part of the show\u2019s appeal, according to Stern. \u201cWe didn\u2019t go into this series wanting to debunk or prove or disprove,\u201d Stern said. \u201cWe went in with a lot of questions, and we hope that people leave asking more.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
