\u201cMr. Bean\u201d and \u201cJohnny English\u201d actor Rowan Atkinson is the latest comedian to take a swipe at cancel culture, equating social<\/a> justice warriors to a \u201cmedieval mob.\u201d The comic dropped the bombshell in a lengthy interview with the UK\u2019s Radio Times. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important that we\u2019re exposed to a wide spectrum of opinion, but what we have now is the digital equivalent of the medieval mob, roaming the streets looking for someone to burn,\u201d the \u201cBlackadder\u201d series<\/a> creator lamented<\/a>. \u201cSo it is scary for anyone who\u2019s a victim of that mob, and it fills me with fear about the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Atkinson blamed the online lynchings on the pervasiveness of social media, which he says operates on \u201can algorithm\u201d that \u201cdecides what we want to see\u201d and \u201cends up creating a simplistic, binary view of society.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt becomes a case of either you\u2019re with us or against us,\u201d the BAFTA winner said of the phenomenon. \u201cAnd if you\u2019re against us, you deserve to be \u2018canceled.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

His criticism comes after a year that saw a plethora of celebrities \u2014 and civilians alike \u2014 have opportunities torpedoed over allegations of racist and otherwise bigoted comments and actions. In one memorable instance, J.K. Rowling\u2019s career was declared \u201cdead\u201d on social media after the \u201cHarry Potter\u201d author made a series of transphobic remarks.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
