elections for U.S. Senate seats in Georgia Tuesday looked set to roil parts of the market. Democrats moved one step closer to control of both houses of Congress, improving the chances of President-elect Joe Biden being able to implement his legislative agenda. <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Democrat Raphael Warnock defeated incumbent Republican Kelly Loeffler for one U.S. Senate seat and Democrat Jon Ossoff held a narrow lead over Republican Sen. David Perdue in the other race, according to the Associated Press. <\/p>\n<p>A Democratic sweep of both seats in Georgia would give the party control of the Senate because Vice President\u2014elect Kamala Harris\u00a0would cast tiebreaking votes as the chamber\u2019s president. <\/p>\n<p>Futures contracts tied to the Nasdaq-100 index were dropping early Wednesday on expectations that a Democrat-controlled Congress would lead to higher taxes and tighter regulations on technology giants.   Shares of U.S. technology giants fell as much as 3% in premarket action. <\/p>\n<p>U.S. bond yields were surging, also weighing on tech stocks and the broader market, as fixed-income investors wager that a Democratic agenda would increase government spending to combat COVID-19\u2019s impact on the economy, likely pushing out more debt and dragging down the value of existing Treasurys. <\/p>\n<p>Tech stocks have enjoyed gains in the past year partly because of the low interest rate environment that has both made it easier for individual investors to justify owning pricey, growth stocks that don\u2019t pay rich dividends against meager bond yields. But the 10-year Treasury note early Wednesday was yielding over 1%, around its highest level since March. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe election tips the balance of the Senate in favour of the Democrats, if we include the VP, which leads naturally to the assumption that there will be another slug of fiscal stimulus to come early this year,\u201d wrote Aegon Asset Management\u2019s fixed-income manager Nick Chatters. <\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s important to keep some perspective on bond yields, Chatters added, noting that the central bank will likely help keep bond yields in check.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhilst it is interesting to talk about fiscal stimulus, and this is important for growth, the main driver of government yields remains the policy rate,\u201d Chatters said. \u201cThe channel to higher policy rates is via employment and inflation in the US, and this channel has long and uncertain lags. So, for treasuries, this is important, but not as important as the Fed.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Bank stocks were rising Wednesday as the yield curve, the spread between short-term bonds and their longer-term counterparts, was widening , a move that tends to be good for the business models of financial institutions. <\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, markets await a private-sector reading of U.S. employment in December from Automatic Data Processing at 8:15 a.m. Eastern Time, ahead of the more closely followed Friday jobs report from the Labor Department. <\/p>\n<p>Minutes of the Federal Reserve\u2019s last meeting, which will be pored over for how the central bank communicates its view of the economic outlook, is due to be released at 2 p.m. <\/p>\n<p>A flash composite reading of U.S. purchasing managers indexes are due at 9:45 a.m., while a report on factory orders will be released at 10 a.m. <\/p>\n<p>On the coronavirus front, the U.S. counted at least 238,763 new cases on Tuesday, and at least 3,648 people died,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/us\/coronavirus-us-cases.html\" class=\"icon none\">according to a New York Times tracker.\u00a0<\/a>In the last week, the U.S. has averaged 219,650 cases a day. <\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Which_companies_are_in_focus\"><\/span>Which companies are in focus?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      Shares of <strong>JPMorgan Chase &amp;Co.<\/strong><br \/>\n        JPM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205971034\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.54%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       were more than 3% higher in premarket trade as investors bet on a steeper yield curve. href=\"http:\/\/Rawley%20-%20%20titles%20of%20he%20and%20cowriter%20Assistant%20Professor%20of%20Finance%20at%20Carroll;%20Charlotte%20is%20a%20ph.d.%20Candidate.%20%20%20How%20did%20you%20come%20to%20this%20research%20question,%20how%20does%20it%20fit%20into%20your%20prior%20research%20%20The%20broader%20research%20questions,%20in%20general%20in%20consumer%20financial%20outcomes%20and%20learning%20about%20how%20people%20make%20decisions%20about%20their%20debt%20usage,%20about%20their%20asset%20allocation,%20and%20I%20think%20that%20this%20is%20sort%20of%20a%20really%20interesting,%20and%20how%20consumers%20interact%20with%20the%20whole%20federal%20bureaucracy%20ad%20the%20regulatory%20process%20is%20a%20really%20fascinating%20question.%20We%20were%20trying%20to%20investigate%20the%20CFPB%20data.%20In%20my%20view%20what%20makes%20this%20interesting%20is%20that%20if%20you%20were%20to%20think%20about%20the%20differences%20in%20outcomes%20that%20happen%20across%20different%20socioeconomic%20status%20individuals,%20for%20example,%20discrimiantion%20in%20mortgage%20markets,%20it%E2%80%99s%20always%20challenging,%20there%E2%80%99s%20always%20this%20underlying%20tension%20in%20terms%20of%20are%20we%20observing%20discrimination%20or%20the%20differences%20across%20indivdiuals.%20You%20can%20see%20that%20an%20under-represetned%20TK%20individual,%20it%E2%80%99s%20always%20hard%20to%20tell%20whether%20the%20difference%20in%20outcomes%20is%20caseud%20by%20the%20treatment%20they%20receive%20from%20financial%20desicion-markers%20such%20as%20a%20loan%20ofifcer%20or%20whther%20there%20are%20differences%20among%20the%20types%20of%20people%20who%20apply%20for%20mortgages.%20Thiis%20is%20interesting%20because%20there's%20no%20reason%20to%20think%20there%20would%20be%20differences%20across%20socioeconomic%20groups%20when%20they%20interact%20with%20the%20CFPB.%20the%20fact%20that%20we%20find%20differences%20here%20raises%20questions%20about%20how%20federal%20regulators%20interact%20and%20intermediate%20the%20issues%20between%20the%20financial%20services%20providers%20and%20consumers.%20The%20CFPB%20in%20many%20ways%20should%20be%20the%20playing%20field%20leveler%20of%20these%20differences.%20That%E2%80%99s%20the%20reason%20why%20you%20wouldn%E2%80%99t%20see%20differences%20in%20treatment.%20If%20the%20CFPB%20is%20performing%20as%20intended%20in%20terms%20of%20reducing%20disparate%20treatment,%20you%20wouldn%E2%80%99t%20expect%20to%20continue%20to%20see%20disparate%20treatment.%20This%20gives%20a%20lot%20of%20insights%20into%20how%20industry%20thinks%20about%20its%20relationships%20to%20consumers%20under%20different%20regulatory%20scenarios.%20The%20key%20feature%20to%20keep%20in%20mind%20is%20that%20across%20a%20broad%20selection%20of%20different%20financial%20service%20provuers,%20they%20feel%20more%20comfortable%20applying%20disparate%20treatments%20in%20different%20political%20environemtns%20when%20they%20know%20the%20c%20is%20going%20to%20be%20less%20agressive%20toward%20them.%20%20What%20does%20this%20research%20tell%20us%20and%20why%20is%20it%20important?%20%20There%20was%20a%20prior%20political%20regime%20that%20seemed%20interested%20in%20supporting%20the%20interests%20of%20Low%20socio-economic%20individuals%20and%20with%20a%20different%20political%20regime%20that%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20share%20that%20view,%20there%E2%80%99s%20a%20change%20in%20the%20regulatory%20institution%20in%20terms%20of%20who%20the%20winners%20and%20losers%20are.%20The%20private%20market%20responds%20to%20expectations%20about%20that%20as%20well.%20When%20companies%20know%20that%20they%20have%20a%20weak%20regulator,%20they%20know%20they%20can%20act%20in%20a%20way%20that%E2%80%99s%20beneficial%20to%20their%20bottom%20line,%20not%20to%20the%20consumer.%20%20That%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20have%20to%20be%20the%20way%20it%20goes.%20In%20consumer%20financial%20products%20there%20often%20aren%E2%80%99t%20a%20lot%20of%20repeat%20product%20purchases,%20and%20not%20a%20lot%20of%20airing%20of%20information%20about%20them.%20That%20means%20there%20are%20individuals%20that%20are%20often%20less%20likely%20to%20get%20attention.%20%20%20Do%20you%20have%20thoughts%20about%20what%20should%20be%20the%20CFPB%20response?%20%20First,%20the%20main%20thing%20is%20that%20it%E2%80%99s%20important%20for%20elected%20officials%20to%20give%20support%20for%20key%20regulatory%20agencies%20because%20there%20are%20many%20instances%20in%20which%20they%20have%20the%20ability%20to%20help%20provide%20good%20outcomes%20for%20individuals.%20It%E2%80%99s%20not%20just%20that%20low%20socioeconomic%20individuals%20lost%20out.%20It%E2%80%99s%20that%20high%20socioeconici%20individuals%20did%20too.%20It%E2%80%99s%20important%20for%20elected%20officials%20to%20want%20to%20provide%20backing%20and%20support%20for%20agencies%20to%20try%20to%20provide%20the%20types%20of%20protections%20for%20individuals%20that%20they%E2%80%99re%20supposed%20to.%20Also%20important%20to%20think%20about%20too%20is%20that%20it%E2%
