“#UK government puts ‘trust in teachers not algorithms’ on 2021 exam results<\/strong>”

\n The British government is replacing this summer\u2019s school-leaving exams in England with teacher assessments, after admitting that the algorithms used in 2021 \u201cdid not deliver what they needed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year we\u2019re going to put our trust in teachers rather than algorithms,\u201d said<\/a> Education Secretary Gavin Williamson.<\/p>\n

The decision will come as a relief to the thousands of students who last year initially had their marks downgraded by a statistical model,\u00a0after\u00a0tests were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

Around 40% of students were marked down from their predicted grades by the algorithm, which used a formula based on a school\u2019s historical results and each pupil\u2019s attainment. Research showed that pupils from fee-paying schools had disproportionately benefited from the calculations.<\/p>\n

A day after demonstrators gathered outside Parliament\u00a0to protest the\u00a0results, the government announced it would ditch the system and replace it with teacher assessments. Prime Minister Boris Johnson blamed the fiasco on \u201ca\u00a0mutant algorithm,\u201d after initially describing the results as \u201crobust\u201d and \u201cdependable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s announcement marks yet another major U-turn for the government, which last month vowed<\/a> that\u00a0GCSEs and A-Levels would \u201cabsolutely\u201d go ahead this year.\u00a0But the move suggests it\u2019s learned at least one lesson from its catalog of failures<\/a>.<\/p>\n
