App<\/a>le is still hoping you\u2019ll pay attention to their original programming, and they might have just found the title to get you to do just that. The company just won the rights to\u00a0The Afterparty<\/em><\/strong>, a comedy series<\/a> about a murder mystery, created by none other than Phil Lord<\/strong> and Chris Miller<\/strong>. The eight-episode series will focus on the events of a single night, with each episode retelling the same story from a different perspective.<\/p>\n

In what\u2019s described as a \u201ccompetitive situation\u201d \u2013 a term that seems to accompany all Apple TV news<\/a> \u2013 Apple has given a straight-to-series order for Chris Miller and Phil Lord\u2019s\u00a0The Afterparty<\/em>. The series is \u201ca murder-mystery comedy set at a high school reunion afterparty. Each of the eight episodes will feature a retelling of the same night told through a different character\u2019s perspective, each with its own unique visual format and film genre to match the teller\u2019s personality.\u201d<\/p>\n

This concept \u2013 the same event retold from different perspectives \u2013 is a staple of whodunnits. Even the recent\u00a0Knives Out<\/em> included it. But it\u2019s the \u201cunique visual format and film genre\u201d approach that\u2019s going to help distinguish\u00a0The Afterparty.\u00a0<\/em>That, and the involvement of Lord and Miller, whose names carry a certain weight thanks to their successful work on\u00a021 Jump Street<\/em>,\u00a0The LEGO Movie<\/em>,\u00a0Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse<\/em>, and more.<\/p>\n

Miller will serve as creator, showrunner, and executive producer of The Afterparty<\/em>\u00a0and Lord will executive produce.\u00a0The series will be produced for Apple by TriStar TV and Sony Pictures Television, where Lord and Miller currently have an expansive five-year overall television deal. There\u2019s no cast attached yet, but we\u2019ll hopefully be learning more about that soon.<\/p>\n

I continue to be puzzled by Apple TV . Apple is a huge company, and their streaming service has a wealth of big names attached \u2013 J.J. Abrams, Steven Spielberg,\u00a0M. Night Shyamalan, Oprah, and on, and on. And yet, there\u2019s almost no buzz about their original programs.\u00a0The Morning Show<\/em> made some headlines when it premiered, but beyond that, there\u2019s been very little talk out there about Apple TV . But\u00a0The Afterparty<\/em> sounds highly promising, and I look forward to seeing how it turns out.<\/p>\n
