“#’Coyote’ is about humanity, not politics<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n

It makes sense that \u201cCoyote\u201d was shot with a multi-national cast and crew \u2014 since the new drama series<\/a> starring Michael Chiklis deals with life on both sides of the US-Mexican border.<\/p>\n

\u201cHalf of our writing staff is Mexican and from South and Central America,\u201d says Chiklis, 57, who plays an ex-US Border Patrol agent in the CBS All Access series. \u201cWe wanted people from every corner of this equation to weigh in on their perspective so that it found itself represented in our script<\/a>s.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a border patrol agent who was our technical advisor as well as [border patrol] people from the Mexican side of the border,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s a tricky line to walk but I feel like we\u2019ve done it very successfully.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Thursday\u2019s series premiere, viewers meet the tough, dedicated and well-respected Ben Clemens (Chiklis), who\u2019s going noisily and reluctantly into retirement after 32 years on the job. Divorced, with a teenage daughter, he heads down to Mexico to finish construction on the house that his work partner, Javi Lopez (played by Jose Pablo Cantillo), was building on a picturesque beachside cliff before meeting his death.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a good man who has made some terrible mistakes and is trying to reconcile those mistakes and salvage his life,\u201d Chiklis says. \u201cHe\u2019s trying to change his own epitaph, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s his trip<\/a> to Mexico that triggers the multi-layered \u201cCoyote\u201d plotline \u2014 when Ben tries to help a teenager, Maria Elena Flores (Emy Mena), who\u2019s pregnant by a local drug kingpin and desperate to escape his clutches. He finds himself enmeshed in a dangerous, life-altering situation that plays itself out on both sides of the border in a series of unexpected twists and turns.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis show is about a conversation between Mexico and the US, about a collision of cultures that\u2019s happening at borders all over the world,\u201d says Chiklis, a 2002 Emmy winner for \u201cThe Shield.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s relatable to so many people who live in countries where cultures are pushed up against each other and have to find a way to co-exist.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought it was a very timely and interesting way for a guy who has looked at the world through a particular prism his whole life to literally and figuratively and suddenly have to be on the other side of the wall \u2026 and walk 100 miles in another man\u2019s shoes.<\/p>\n

\u2018We\u2019ve removed the politics entirely to show and represent all points of view without taking a position.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an interesting way to take a very hot-button political topic and humanize it,\u201d he says. \u201cWe\u2019ve removed the politics entirely to show and represent all points of view without taking a position \u2026 so that people can watch the show and not get so caught up in the politics but in the humanity.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo matter what happens, the border situation is still very current and is going to remain so,\u201d he says. \u201cWe wanted to take an even deeper dive into this situation and see where it takes us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Where \u201cCoyote,\u201d didn\u2019t<\/em> take Chiklis and his fellow executive producers, including Michelle MacLaren (\u201cBreaking Bad,\u201d \u201cGame<\/a> of Thrones\u201d) and David Graziano (\u201cAmerican Gods\u201d), was to completion of the 10-episode series, which was shot in Baja, Mexico.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were in the middle of Episode 7 when we got interrupted by COVID,\u201d says Chiklis. \u201cNot without irony, we weren\u2019t able to continue once things went back into production a few months back because we weren\u2019t able to go into Mexico.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we\u2019re able to continue, and I hope we are, I think [the shutdown] was a blessing in disguise because of everything that happened in 2020,\u201d he says. \u201cI feel like that\u2019s going to shape the way forward in all kinds of storytelling in regards to this [border] issue.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
