expert\n                        <\/div>\n<div>\n                                                                        <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 20,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines were administered<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>on Jan. 5, including a dose given to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JSavikataaq\/status\/1346841039181643779?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Josephee Adams, a 70-year-old resident of the Iqaluit Elders\u2019 Centre<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0who was the first person in Nunavut to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Territorial and provincial vaccination\u00a0programs are ramping up:\u00a0the 13,046 doses injected into the arms of Ontarians on Jan. 6 represents 18.3 per cent of all doses given\u00a0out since the province\u2019s program began on Dec. 14, according to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/art-bd.shinyapps.io\/covid19canada\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data collected by the COVID-19 Canada Open Data Working Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The need is urgent: On Jan. 6, Canada reported another 7,929 cases of COVID-19, as well as 194 new hospitalizations and\u00a0172 deaths, while <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">temporary morgues in refrigerated trailers are now parked at the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/windsor\/windsor-essex-dead-bodies-1.5862304?fbclid=IwAR2DEOv1p7r-dTGLRdukAAoxKwPXHOG2nlw8zMC7ILRGNMJ5TkBWe4xkEVI\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Windsor Regional Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/london\/bodies-stored-in-refrigerated-trailer-after-london-s-morgue-reaches-capacity-1.5861544?__vfz=medium%3Dsharebar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">London Health Sciences Centre<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Ontario and field hospitals have opened in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/ottawa\/temporary-unit-civic-hospital-ottawa-opens-1.5863896\">Ottawa<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/gta\/2021\/01\/04\/burlington-field-hospital-built-for-covid-19-patients-opening-its-doors.html\">Burlington<\/a>, Ont., while another is being <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/gta\/2021\/01\/04\/burlington-field-hospital-built-for-covid-19-patients-opening-its-doors.html\">constructed in the Butterdome on the University of Alberta campus<\/a> in Edmonton<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0Why aren\u2019t governments reserving second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine anymore?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With few signs that the second wave is slowing, one of the questions that is top of mind of many is how quickly the vaccines will begin to improve the situation in Canada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As soon as this month or the next, the experts say,\u00a0depending on the swiftness of the vaccination programs and their focus. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we are vaccinating older people first, we will see reduced deaths and hospitalizations essentially within a month of the [widespread] vaccine rollout,\u201d Dr. Lynora Saxinger, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an infectious diseases physician in Edmonton and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ualberta.ca\/medicine\/about\/people\/details.html?n=lynora-saxinger\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">associate professor at the University of Alberta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maclean\u2019s <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">last month,\u00a0after plans were unveiled to vaccinate three million Canadians by the end of March 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 70-plus age group <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/immunization\/national-advisory-committee-on-immunization-naci\/guidance-prioritization-initial-doses-covid-19-vaccines.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is in the first priority group to get the vaccine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of the disproportionate effect COVID-19 has had on the elderly. Fifty-four per cent of all hospital admissions and 38 per cent of ICU admissions due to COVID-19 were of patients aged 70 and older,<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/health-infobase.canada.ca\/covid-19\/epidemiological-summary-covid-19-cases.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> according to Public Health Agency of Canada data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As well, 89 per cent of all COVID-19 deaths have been in that same age group.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0Who is next in line for the vaccine in Canada?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Robyn Lee, an infectious diseases epidemiologist at the University of Toronto, says that a key indicator of the\u00a0vaccine program\u2019s effect will be the number of cases at long-term care (LTC) facilities. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m hoping we\u2019ll see a decrease,\u201d Lee says. \u201cI hope we see that very rapidly.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Jan. 5, the Ontario government <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.ontario.ca\/en\/release\/59871\/ontario-accelerates-covid-19-vaccinations-for-long-term-care-homes-in-priority-regions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accelerated its vaccination plans,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> announcing it would vaccinate all LTC residents, workers and essential caregivers in COVID-19 hotspots by Jan. 21. As some protection is provided even with the first dose, the\u00a0effects of those initial shots could soon be seen in the COVID-19 data. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is less clear is how the vaccination plan will impact the overall number of cases in the country, cautions Kevin Wilson, an epidemiologist in Halifax, for, while most COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths involve seniors, the the majority of cases in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> are of those in younger age groups. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The effect on case numbers will depend on whether the vaccine prevents infection or just makes infections less dangerous,\u201d he says, as it isn\u2019t clear as of now whether the Pfizer or Modern vaccines prevent those who have been vaccinated from still spreading the coronavirus to others.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0COVID-19 in Canada: How our battle against the second wave is going<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The effect of focusing on the elderly at the start of the vaccination program will benefit all of Canada, Saxinger says, as she <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expects that that societal functions will improve \u201cbecause a lot of the restrictions are really designed to reduce community transmission and protect health care and reduce transmission to protect the elderly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>As Canada rolls out the country\u2019s most complex vaccination project to date, <\/em>Maclean\u2019s<em> presents <\/em>Vaxx Populi<em>, an ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> in which Patricia Treble tackles the most pressing questions related to the new COVID-19 vaccines.
