This TikTok-born meme musical has manifested some very real money.<\/p>\n

The pre-filmed \u201cRatatouille: The TikTok Musical\u201d debuted online Friday for a three-day streaming run and immedia<\/a>tely racked up more than $1 million in ticket sales.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou did it! You raised over $1 million to benefit @TheActorsFund!\u201d the musical\u2019s Twitter account tweeted<\/a> on New Year\u2019s Day. <\/p>\n

The musical concept began on TikTok in August, after New Yorker Em Jaccs posted a clip of her love ballad for the protagonist of Disney\u2019s 2007 film \u201cRatatouille.\u201d A niche of creators on the social-media platform then began proposing various elements for a DIY musical version of the film, including set designs, backup dancer design sketches and solo songs for smaller characters. By October, a centralized @RatatouilleTheTikTokMusical account had been born, and in December, bona fide production company Seaview began collaborating on making the musical a reality. <\/p>\n

A star-studded cast \u2014 including Wayne Brady (\u201cKinky Boots\u201d), Adam Lambert (\u201cWicked\u201d tour), Tituss Burgess (\u201cThe Little Mermaid\u201d) and Ashley Park (\u201cMean Girls\u201d) \u2014 was revealed just before the end of the year. Tickets<\/a> cost $5 and were sold via TodayTix.com.<\/p>\n

While creators app<\/a>ear thrilled that an only relatively earnest internet joke was able to be realized as a professionally produced box-office hit generating seven digits for a good cause, the New York Times gave the performance a less than glowing review<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt still lacks the \u2018actual show\u2019 part; the haste that gave \u2018Ratatouille\u2019 its moxie has also kept it shallow,\u201d wrote Times chief theater critic Jesse Green. \u201cOnly slivers of the TikTok material made it into the hourlong piece, and even less of the movie\u2019s richer action.\u201d<\/p>\n

Green also said that the show is unique and a one-off, not a sign of more TikTok musicals to come.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am not convinced that the TikTok mind-set can be applied to musical theater content (as opposed to its process) going forward,\u201d he wrote, albeit ending his review on a positive note. He said that \u201cRatatouille\u201d may have \u201ctoo many chefs, but they offer, as one character puts it, \u2018just the right amount of cheese.’\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
