Conservative: Americans Don\u2019t Want \u2018Change\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Whenever Democrats manage to pick the \u201celectoral locks\u201d and \u201cfind themselves in control of the White House,\u201d snarks Kyle Smith at National Review<\/a>, they claim \u201cthe People have spoken\u201d and want \u201cProfound and Lasting Change!\u201d Yet voters in November, as in past elections, simply chose the guy who wasn\u2019t the incumbent. All Joe Biden needed to win was to say, \u201cI\u2019m not Trump.\u201d Democrats \u201cwill be shoving themselves into a buzzsaw\u201d if they interpret November\u2019s results \u2014 which had Biden winning only by small margins in a few key states and left Congress closely split \u2014 as \u201ca decisive mandate for sweeping change.\u201d Or even as \u201ca whispered suggestion of substantial change.\u201d Americans \u201cdon\u2019t want anything more complicated than to turn the page on the Trump era.\u201d<\/p>\n

Capitol beat: How Did the Mob Get In?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Roll Call\u2019s Chris Marquette notes<\/a> the tragic irony of the mob attack on the Capitol building \u2014 given that just last week, the Capitol Police insisted that \u201cit had a comprehensive plan to keep Congress safe while lawmakers certify the Electoral College win by Joe Biden.\u201d So much for that: \u201cIt is unclear how the Capitol Police force \u2014 with 1,879 sworn officers and a budget of $515.5 million \u2014 was unable to protect Congress.\u201d As one lawmaker said, \u201cI think it\u2019s pretty clear that there\u2019s going to be a number of people who are going to be without employment very, very soon,\u201d owing to the \u201clack of professional planning and dealing with what we knew was going to occur.\u201d<\/p>\n

Economist: Trump Proved Stagnationists Wrong<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Obama administration promulgated hundreds of new federal regulations that protected certain special interests from market competition. . . . President Trump promised to undo all that, and in many cases succeeded,\u201d Casey B. Mulligan points out at The Wall Street Journal<\/a>. And soon: \u201cThe economy was growing at the same time that something was dragging down inflation\u201d \u2014 defying \u201cthe \u2018secular-stagnation\u2019 narrative of economic decline that had become so fashionable in Washington.\u201d When Obama-era growth lagged, this school argued that America \u201cwas fundamentally incapable of anything more than tepid growth.\u201d They didn\u2019t expect \u201cthat small business optimism would skyrocket to record levels . . . real wages would grow again (especially for blue-collar workers)\u201d and poverty and unemployment would fall quickly \u2014 thanks to Trump\u2019s policies. Obama \u201cpunished work, hiring and success rather than rewarding them.\u201d Trump, meanwhile, sank stagnation.<\/p>\n

Foreign desk: Putin\u2019s Goons a Laughingstock<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cVladimir Putin has used the FSB\u2019s aura of efficiency and brutality to threaten regime opponents with kompromat, exile, poisoning or a bullet to the head,\u201d Paul Roderick Gregory writes at The Hill<\/a>, but the \u201cbotched \u00adassassination of opposition leader Alexey Navalny and the embarrassing unraveling of the Kremlin\u2019s narrative thereafter have turned the FSB into a laughingstock.\u201d A key moment: Navalny\u2019s taped call to purported assassin Konstantin Kudryavtsev, where the dissident conned the goon into explaining why the attempt went wrong. \u201cKonstantin\u2019s most telling revelation: The squad laced the poison into the seams of Navalny\u2019s blue underpants.\u201d With the tape\u2019s release, \u201cthe Kremlin was caught flat-footed,\u201d as \u201cdemonstrators stood on Moscow street corners holding blue underwear,\u201d and \u201cRussian social media<\/a> erupted in salvos of satire, sarcasm and political hilarity.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: 1776 Panel\u2019s Laudable Goal<\/strong><\/p>\n

The first meeting of President Trump\u2019s 1776 Commission Tuesday \u00ad\u201cincluded a wide range of voices\u201d and \u201ca commitment to American ideals,\u201d reports The Federalist\u2019s Joy Pullmann <\/a>\u2014 with members stressing the need to avoid \u201cpartisanship\u201d and to reach out to \u201cAmericans of all backgrounds.\u201d That contrasts sharply with \u201cleftist\u201d depictions of the panel and \u201cwild claims\u201d that it seeks to \u201chide America\u2019s sins\u201d and promote \u201cchest-thumping nationalism.\u201d The group merely aims to unite Americans in \u201ca shared identity rooted in our founding principles\u201d and stresses the importance of education. As one speaker noted, \u201cif Americans understand who we are as a nation and where we have come from, they will better be able to transcend race and other things that divide us.\u201d<\/p>\n
