Broadway is done trying to make fetch<\/em> happ<\/a>en.<\/p>\n

Tony-nominated musical \u201cMean Girls\u201d \u2014 based on Tina Fey\u2019s 2004\u00a0movie \u2014 has officially shut down and will not return to the August Wilson Theatre after the coronavirus pandemic winds down and venues reopen.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you to the brilliant creative team, cast and crew that brought\u00a0\u2018Mean Girls<\/em>\u2018\u00a0to life from our first reading to final performance,\u201d producer and \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d show honcho Lorne Michaels said in a statement Thursday, according to<\/a> the Hollywood Reporter. \u201cWe remain excited to bring this musical to the big screen, relaunch the tour and prepare for a London production. I look forward to the day, hopefully soon, when theaters can open their doors again.\u201d<\/p>\n

The show, which grossed more than $124 million with over 800 performances, opened in April 2018 and shut down March 11, 2020, due to COVID-19. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe chance to bring this show to Broadway, with such a talented young ensemble and five astounding female leads, has been a dream come true,\u201d said Fey. \u201cAnd to our fierce and dedicated fans\u2013 the limit of our gratitude does not exist.\u201d <\/p>\n

The opening night cast included Erika Henningsen, Taylor Louderman, Barrett Wilbert Weed, Kate Rockwell and Ashley Park. The original film comedy starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, Lacey Chabert and Lizzy Caplan. <\/p>\n

Broadway theaters are not expected to reopen until at least June. Thirty-one shows were shut down starting March 12, 2020, including eight that were still in previews. <\/p>\n

\u201cWith nearly 97,000 workers who rely on Broadway for their livelihood and an annual economic impact of $14.8 billion to the city, our membership is committed to re-opening as soon as conditions permit us to do so,\u201d Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League, in a statement in October. \u201cWe are working tirelessly with multiple partners on sustaining the industry once we raise our curtains again.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
