“#Nope, ‘facial recognition’ didn’t spot Antifa members at US riots<\/strong>”

\n After right-wing rioters stormed the US Capitol building on Wednesday,\u00a0Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz pushed a conspiracy theory that members of Antifa masquerading as Trump supporters were among the mob.<\/p>\n

Gaetz, an ardent Trump ally, based his claims on a Washington Times report containing \u201ccompelling evidence\u201d\u00a0from a facial recognition\u00a0firm.<\/p>\n

The story\u00a0features a cast of shady\u00a0characters: a controversial Congressman who\u2019s been accused of glorifying violence<\/a>, a pack of far-right protestors; a publication with a history of shoddy reporting<\/a>, and a mysterious facial recognition company.<\/p>\n

But the company in question \u2014 XRVision \u2014 told TNW that the claims are nonsense. In a statement, XRVision said it hadn\u2019t identified anyone from Antifa \u2014 although it had detected two members of\u00a0neo-Nazi organizations and\u00a0another individual with a history of promoting QAnon:<\/p>\n

The image analysis that we performed were distributed to a handful of individuals for their private consumption and not for publication.\u00a0XRVision<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>takes pride in its\u00a0technology<\/a>\u2019s precision and deems the Washington Times publication as outright false, misleading,\u00a0and defamatory.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

XRVision said its attorney had\u00a0instructed the Washington Times right-wing outlet to retract its claims and publish an apology. The conservative outlet has now issued a correction and apology for the error.<\/span><\/p>\n

XRVision has also provided sample images of the individuals its technology purportedly detected.\u00a0But the company\u2019s\u00a0investigation also requires further scrutiny.<\/p>\n

OneZero\u2019s Dave Gershgorn notes<\/a> that XRVision\u00a0hasn\u2019t published research publicly, provided online information about its technology or clients, or\u00a0submitted its algorithms for testing by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

L<\/span>ike the Antifa conspiracy theory, the words of Congressman Gaetz, and the app<\/a>arently unsubstantiated Washington Times report, the facial recognition firm\u2019s claims shouldn\u2019t be taken at face value.<\/p>\n
