Michael Apted<\/strong>, the filmmaker behind films like\u00a0The Coal Miner\u2019s Daughter<\/em> and the decades-spanning\u00a0Up<\/em><\/strong> documentary series<\/a>, has died. He was 79.<\/p>\n

Acclaimed British filmmaker Michael Apted, best known for his acclaimed series of\u00a0Seven Up<\/em> documentaries as well as feature films like\u00a0Coal Miner\u2019s Daughter<\/em>,\u00a0Nell<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The World Is Not Enough<\/em>,\u00a0has died at age 79, his agency confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>. No further details are yet known.
\nBorn on February 10, 1941, in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England, Apted was working as a trainee at Granada Television in 1964 when he was tasked with finding 14 children who would be interviewed for a 40-minute ITV documentary called\u00a0Seven Up!<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0The documentary, directed by Paul Almond, was designed to be a one-off project, but Granada made the unusual choice of checking back in with those children in 1970, this time putting Apted in charge as producer and director. The result was a revolutionary documentary series in which Apted played a pivotal role, helming every subsequent edition of what has now been dubbed the Up<\/em> series:\u00a021 Up<\/em>\u00a0(1977),\u00a028 Up<\/em>\u00a0(1984),\u00a0\u00a035 Up<\/em>\u00a0(1991),\u00a042 Up<\/em>\u00a0(1998),\u00a049 Up<\/em>\u00a0(2005),\u00a056 Up<\/em>\u00a0(2012), and finally, 63 Up<\/em>\u00a0(2019). The\u00a0Up<\/em> documentaries were still going strong with the most recent entry, which raises the question of whether the films will continue after Apted\u2019s passing.<\/p>\n

But Apted would be known for more than directing documentaries, even though he helmed his fair share of them, including 1985\u2019s\u00a0Bring on the Night<\/em>, and the 1997 doc\u00a0Inspirations<\/em>, which\u00a0focused on David Bowie and six other artists. Apted is also known for directing\u00a0Coal Miner\u2019s Daughter<\/em>, a 1980 drama that earned Sissy Spacek an Oscar for her performance as Loretta Lynn and seven other nominations, including Best Picture. Apted also directed Jodie Foster and Sigourney Weaver to Best Actress Oscar nods in\u00a0Nell<\/em> (1994) and\u00a0Gorillas in the Mist\u00a0<\/em>(1988) before making his biggest Hollywood tentpole, the 1999 James Bond flick\u00a0The World is Not Enough<\/em>, starring Pierce Brosnan.<\/p>\n

Apted wouldn\u2019t tackle many more big Hollywood blockbuster productions again, with the exception of 2010\u2019s\u00a0The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader<\/em>, which subsequently became the last installment in the film series<\/p>\n

More recently, Apted directed\u00a0Amazing Grace<\/em>\u00a0(2006),\u00a0Chasing Mavericks<\/em>\u00a0(2012) \u2014 taking over after Curtis Hanson exited \u2014 and\u00a0Unlocked<\/em>\u00a0(2017), as well as episodes of\u00a0Ray Donovan<\/em>,\u00a0Masters of Sex<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Bloodline<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Apted served for three terms as the DGA president from 2003 to 2009, and received the guild\u2019s Robert B. Aldrich Award in 2013 and its Honorary Life Member honor five years later. He also was a member of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science<\/a>s board of governors.
\nApted is survived by his wife, Paige Simpson, sons Jim and John, and daughter Lily Mellis.<\/p>\n
