It took nearly three years for \u201cEveryone is Doing Great\u201d to find its home.<\/p>\n

The comedy series<\/a>, available only on Hulu starting Wednesday (Jan. 13), was created by pals James Lafferty and Stephen Colletti, who co-starred on the long-running teen-angst drama \u201cOne Tree Hill\u201d \u2014 and who used a combination of gumption and crowdfunding to ultimately land their eight-episode series on the streaming network.<\/p>\n

\u201cStephen and I had wanted to collaborate for a while, we just didn\u2019t now what that was going to be,\u201d says Lafferty, 35, who played Nathan Scott on \u201cOne Tree Hill.\u201d \u201cEventually we got to the point where we\u2019d lived enough life and had that \u2018light bulb\u2019 moment where we went, \u2018OK, this is actually kind of funny. We\u2019re seeing these things happ<\/a>ening around us and to us.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Their idea morphed into \u201cEveryone is Doing Great,\u201d which centers around thirtysomething actors Seth (Colletti) and Jeremy (Lafferty), five years removed from their hit vampire TV series \u201cEternal\u201d and coming to terms with their lives and their relationships. For Jeremy, that includes his wife and \u201cEternal\u201d co-star, Andrea (Alexandra Park). The cast also includes Cariba Heine (\u201cDesignated Survivor\u201d) and Karissa Lee Staples (\u201cS.W.A.T.\u201d)<\/p>\n

Lafferty and Colletti shot the series pilot in 2018, then turned to the crowdfunding platform Indiegogo to raise enough money to finish shooting the next seven episodes, which took them through the late summer of 2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe knew there were resources \u2014 crowdfunding and going around to some festivals and seeing if we could generate interest and financing,\u201d says Colletti, 34 (Chase Adams on \u201cOne Tree Hill\u201d). \u201cWe really didn\u2019t want to leave it up to the industry \u2014 we knew we could do it ourselves the way we wanted to do it and keep the creative integrity at the heart of the show.\u201d<\/p>\n

Colletti says the choice of using \u201cEternal\u201d as Jeremy and Seth\u2019s previous hit TV series made a lot of sense in setting the tone of the series.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would say that \u2018One Tree Hill\u2019 and the vampire series are two of the same, but different in the sense that [\u2018Eternal\u2019] was something very visual, with the vampire aspects and how we thought it would be really fun to play with that,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen we have the flashback scenes with Jeremy and Seth sitting on the set in full makeup with blood dripping down their mouths, complaining that the sushi they ordered for lunch didn\u2019t come in time\u2026we knew that would be a little more interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Park\u2019s appearance in the \u201cDoing Great\u201d pilot was brief, since she was still working on E!\u2019s \u201cThe Royals\u201d (she played Princess Eleanor Henstridge); once she finished shooting that show\u2019s fourth season she was back on board. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d say she\u2019s strong-willed and no-nonense, for sure,\u201d she says of Andrea. \u201cWhat drew me to her was that she\u2019s an interesting girl who\u2019s set the bar quite high for herself and finds herself in a very difficult position. Andre has gone straight from \u2018Eternal\u2019 to finding success in another show almost immedia<\/a>tely and is having all these problems in her marriage, with Jeremy spiraling into a stage she sees as beneath her on the surface because she\u2019s a bit of a perfectionist and control freak.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all struggle with that need for control and perfectionism and she starts to realize that\u2019s not really the key to happiness,\u201d she says. \u201cShe learns a lot about herself and her choices and what\u2019s important to her\u2026and we see her unravel in that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lafferty and Colletti say they had shows including \u201cDol & Em,\u201d \u201cCatastrophe\u201d and \u201cThe Trip<\/a>\u201d in mind as they were constructing the series.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen people read the logline they think it\u2019s similar to \u2018Entourage\u2019\u2026but we didn\u2019t want it to feel so aspirational and fun,\u201d Lafferty says. \u201cWe wanted the humor to come from the awkwardness\u2026those little moments where it seems like nothing\u2019s happening but everything\u2019s happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about trying to look around and re-evaluate your life \u2014 how did I get here? Where am I going? \u2014 and being honest with yourself,\u201d Colletti says. \u201cThe big arc for our characters this season is trying to figure it all out, adjusting from there and finding new growth.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
