“#Confederate flag found outside Jewish museum in NYC<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

A Confederate flag was discovered outside a Jewish museum in Lower Manhattan early Friday, prompting officials to condemn the hurtful stunt and call on the authorities to investigate.<\/p>\n

The flag \u2014 which has been adopted by far-right extremists \u2014 was tied overnight to the front door of the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery Park, the museum said. <\/p>\n

Jack Kliger, the museum\u2019s president and CEO, said he is working with the NYPD to help identify the suspect or suspects. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an atrocious attack on our community and on our institution and must be met with the swift and forceful response by law enforcement,\u201d Kliger said in a statement<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Confederate flag is a potent symbol of white supremacy, as evidenced by the events at the U.S. Capitol this week.\u201d<\/p>\n

Supporters of President Trump, many of them wearing red \u201cMake America Great Again\u201d hats while carrying Trump and Confederate flags, stormed Capitol Hill on Wednesday during a violent siege that killed five people, including a Capitol police officer, three who suffered medical emergencies, and an Air Force veteran who was among the rioters. <\/p>\n

Mayor Bill de Blasio and Gov. Andrew Cuomo were quick to condemned the vandalism calling the Confederate flag a \u201csymbol of hate.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Confederate flag is a symbol of hate,\u201d de Blasio tweeted <\/a>in response to the incident. \u201cWe have ZERO tolerance for acts of fascism and bigotry. There will be consequences for those responsible.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Confederate flag is a repulsive symbol of hate, and I am disgusted by reports that someone attempted to intimidate our Jewish neighbors by tying one to the door of the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City,\u201d Cuomo said in a statement, adding that he\u2019s asked the NYPD\u2019s Hate Crimes Task Force to investigate.<\/p>\n

The NYPD says it is investigating the incident. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt is, as the museum says, an atrocious act,\u201d said a department spokesman.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
