\u201cSo long,\u201d Alex Trebek.<\/p>\n

\u201cJeopardy!\u201d fans said goodbye to the late, beloved host Friday after his final episode aired, using his longtime sign-off line \u2014 and a flurry of crying emojis. The episode, the last one he filmed before he lost his battle with pancreatic cancer on Nov. 8 at age 80<\/a>, was recorded on Oct. 29, 2020 \u2014 just 10 days before he passed \u2014 and went off without a hitch.<\/p>\n

At the end of the episode, Trebek said, \u201cSee you again next week,\u201d which brought tears to fans\u2019 eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cHearing Alex Trebeck [sic] say, \u2018We\u2019ll see you next week\u2019 for the last time really hits different,\u201d said one<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cOMG I\u2019M SOBBING,\u201d wrote another<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn moments of darkness, Alex Trebek has always been a source of light. Even after he tragically dies, he manages to still provide that light two months later,\u201d a viewer wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all told ourselves we\u2019d be ready, that the last few weeks have prepared us for tonight,\u201d wrote one fan<\/a>. \u201cI think it\u2019s safe to say we\u2019ve been lying to ourselves, that the tears are going to flow. But that\u2019s ultimately a testament to the sheer goodness of Alex Trebek.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery week night since I can remember he\u2019s been on my tv right at 7 PM,\u201d added another<\/a>. \u201cCan\u2019t believe it\u2019ll be the last new episode I\u2019ll watch with him as the host.\u201d<\/p>\n

The program ended with a tribute video for the man who has been its host since 1984, set to Peter Allen\u2019s \u201cOnce Before I Go,\u201d but \u201cJeopardy!\u201d released it\u00a0early on Twitter<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0YouTube<\/a>\u00a0for fans to savor the moment.<\/p>\n

Famous contestants also paid their respects to Trebek ahead of his final episode.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m still not ready to say goodbye to Alex Trebek, but I will try,\u201d James Holzhauer, the third-highest-earning contestant,\u00a0wrote on Twitter<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cSo long, old friend. The \u2018Jeopardy!\u2019 music will always bring a tear to my eye.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cAlex was always a familiar TV face, but it was so gratifying during the last years of his life to see him universally recognized as the national treasure,\u201d added champ Ken Jennings<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a\u00a0lengthy op-ed<\/a>\u00a0on CNN.com, contestant Albert Thakur \u2014 who told Trebek he \u201clearned English because of\u201d him in a\u00a0viral show moment<\/a>\u00a0full of tears \u2014 called the host a \u201cmiracle.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trebek never filmed a goodbye message to fans as he promised,\u00a0according to The Wrap<\/a>, since his \u201cpassing was so sudden that he never had a chance to say what he had prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n

He once said he would need just 30 seconds.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will say my goodbyes and I will tell people, \u2018Don\u2019t ask me who\u2019s going to replace me because I have no say whatsoever. But I\u2019m sure that if you give them the same love and attention and respect that you have shown me \u2026 then they will be a success and the show will continue being a success,\u2019\u2009\u201d he said in January 2020. \u201cAnd until we meet again, God bless you and goodbye.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, Monday night\u2019s opening message served as his final goodbye.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll recall that about a month ago, I asked all of you to take a moment to give thanks for all of the blessings that you enjoy in your lives,\u201d the host \u2014 who is\u00a0survived by his wife, Jean Currivan Trebek<\/a>, and two children \u2014 said. \u201cNow, today, a different kind of message. This is the season of giving. I know you want to be generous with your family, your friends, your loved ones.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cBut today, I\u2019d like you to go one step further. I\u2019d like you to open up your hands and open up your hearts to those who are still suffering because of COVID-19. People who are suffering through no fault of their own. We\u2019re trying to build a gentler, kinder society, and if we all pitch in \u2014 just a little bit \u2014 we\u2019re gonna get there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mike Richards, the game<\/a> show\u2019s executive producer,\u00a0told NBC\u2019s \u201cToday\u201d<\/a>\u00a0show the crew erupted in app<\/a>lause.<\/p>\n

Distributor CBS Television and producer Sony Television have not announced a permanent replacement \u2014 although there have been rumors. However, there will be\u00a0interim hosts on a rotating basis, including the likes of Jennings and\u00a0even Katie Couric.<\/p>\n

Jennings will host Monday night\u2019s episode \u2014 the first without Trebek.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
