Facebook will launch a pair of \u201cconnected\u201d glasses very soon this year.<\/p>\n

The smart specs have been teased previous, but largely remain a mystery.<\/p>\n

Despite suffering major privacy scandals in the past, Facebook hopes it can convince everyday folk to don a pair of web-connected glasses.<\/p>\n

Facebook still won\u2019t say exactly what these smart spectacles will do.<\/p>\n

But the company confirmed that the first version won\u2019t support proper augmented reality,\u201d as revealed by\u00a0Bloomberg.<\/a><\/p>\n

That means you won\u2019t see computer-generated images overlaid on top of your regular vision.<\/p>\n

However, it\u2019s possible that Facebook may still build in some kind of signal or alert feature to the glasses.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are certainly connected glasses,\u201d said Facebook hardware boss Andrew Bosworth.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are certainly providing a lot of functionality.<\/p>\n

\u201c[But] we\u2019re being quite coy about which functionality precisely we are providing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re excited about it but don\u2019t want to over-hype it.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re not even calling it augmented reality, we\u2019re just calling it \u2018smart glasses\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

The company is building the glasses with specs giant Ray-Ban, and its parent firm Luxottica Group SpA.<\/p>\n

Facebook first confirmed that it would be creating a pair of AR glasses back in 2017.<\/p>\n

And the firm\u2019s VR and AR division employs several thousand people.<\/p>\n

But the first version of the glasses will miss out on some AR features \u2013 though we don\u2019t know exactly what.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s possible that one feature might include a camera.<\/p>\n

Bosworth hinted: \u201cBy the time you get the phone up, not only have you probably missed it, but if you don\u2019t miss it, you\u2019re probably watching the real event but through your phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you have the right technology<\/a>, it can get out of the way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Snapchat famously released several versions of smart camera glasses, to limited success.<\/p>\n

Facebook is a better-known brand however, and may have better luck.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
