Jackson was part of a group of very important women who helped NASA succeed in getting American astronauts into space. Mary never accepted the status quo, she helped break barriers and open opportunities for African Americans and women in the field of engineering and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>,\u201d Bridenstine said in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, we proudly announce the Mary W. Jackson NASA Headquarters building,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ropriately sits on \u2018Hidden Figures Way,\u2019 a reminder that Mary is one of many incredible and talented professionals in NASA\u2019s history who contributed to this agency\u2019s success. Hidden no more, we will continue to recognize the contributions of women, African Americans and people of all backgrounds who have made NASA\u2019s successful history of exploration possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15890470\"><img alt=\"Mary W. Jackson NASA Headquarters building in Washington, DC.<\/span><span>NASA<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jackson, a mathematician and engineer, started her NASA career in the segregated West Area Computing Unit of the agency\u2019s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va.<\/p>\n<p>Her work was also the subject of the 2016 Margot Lee Shetterly book \u201cHidden Figures,\u201d which was made into a feature film that same year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are honored that NASA continues to celebrate the legacy of our mother and grandmother Mary W. Jackson,\u201d Mary\u2019s daughter Carolyn Lewis said. \u201cShe was a scientist, humanitarian, wife, mother and trailblazer who paved the way for thousands of others to succeed, not only at NASA, but throughout this nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, President Trump signed the Hidden Figures Congressional Gold Medal Act and posthumously awarded Jackson\u2019s efforts, along with those of her colleagues. She passed away in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>The renaming comes after various protests erupted throughout the US over police brutality following the death of Minneapolis man George Floyd. The demonstrations have led to a national debate over the depiction of certain historical monuments, the Confederate flag and brands such as Aunt Jemimah.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15890485\"><img alt=\"Mary Jackson. \" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cNASA facilities across the country are named after people who dedicated their lives to push the frontiers of the aerospace industry. The nation is beginning to awaken to the greater need to honor the full diversity of people who helped pioneer our great nation. Over the years NASA has worked to honor the work of these Hidden Figures in various ways, including naming facilities, renaming streets and celebrating their legacy,\u201d Bridenstine said.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cWe know there are many other people of color and diverse backgrounds who have contributed to our success, which is why we\u2019re continuing the conversations started about a year ago with the agency\u2019s Unity Campaign.
