states<\/a>\u00a0are\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/facebook-hit-with-antitrust-lawsuit-by-federal-trade-commission-state-attorneys-general-11607543139\" class=\"icon none\">suing Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for allegedly\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/zuckerbergs-deal-making-for-facebook-is-central-to-antitrust-cases-11607596201\" class=\"icon none\">squelching competition<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/how-facebook-spread-out-with-deals-for-whatsapp-instagram-and-others-11607548228\" class=\"icon none\">acquiring startups<\/a>, and seeking divestiture of Instagram and Whats<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>. The suits are without merit and bad economic policy.<\/p>\n<p> Facebook<br \/>\n        FB,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205064656\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.64%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       offers users a tool to create online bulletin boards where individuals, affinity groups and businesses can communicate personal <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>, collaborate, market products and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly network.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Network_effects\"><\/span>Network effects<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>It is great for organizing family gatherings and class reunions and has evolved into the dominant bulletin board platform because of the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2020\/09\/breaking-up-facebook-wont-fix-social-media\" class=\"icon none\">network effect<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Like the telephone system, the value of most social media services grows with the number of active users on the same platform. Unlike cellphone services, social media apps generally lack interoperability\u2014the ability to send a message from Facebook to Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Membership is free\u2014Facebook can\u2019t harm consumers by raising prices as is usually understood in antitrust law. Its business model is driven by online ad sales, where its\u00a023% market share trails Google at 29%.\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2020-12-14\/facebook-might-pose-dangers-it-isn-t-a-monopoly?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_term=201214&amp;utm_campaign=sharetheview\" class=\"icon none\">Online ad rates have fallen 40% since 2010<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the broader social media, messaging and moderation space, Facebook has plenty of competition\u2014Snap<br \/>\n        SNAP,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205087158\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+4.89%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Slack<br \/>\n        WORK,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/212180539\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.32%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       LinkedIn<br \/>\n        MSFT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207732364\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.33%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Reddit, Discord and TikTok. The latter grew to 800 million users in just four years.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Data_mining\"><\/span>Data mining<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>The most fundamental problems with Facebook and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/why-is-the-justice-department-suing-google-11603200193\" class=\"icon none\">Google<\/a><br \/>\n        GOOGL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202490156\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.95%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       which faces a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/justice-department-to-file-long-awaited-antitrust-suit-against-google-11603195203\" class=\"icon none\">Justice Department<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/states-file-antitrust-lawsuit-against-google-11608228334?mod=hp_lead_pos2\" class=\"icon none\">two<\/a>\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/states-sue-google-over-digital-ad-practices-11608146817?mod=hp_lead_pos1\" class=\"icon none\">state suits<\/a>, Apple<br \/>\n        AAPL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202934861\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.50%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       which is fending off\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/13\/us\/politics\/supreme-court-antitrust-apple.html\" class=\"icon none\">a class-action suit<\/a>, and Twitter<br \/>\n        TWTR,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203180645\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-7.21%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       which recently was\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/twitter-fined-546-000-in-first-cross-border-gdpr-case-for-u-s-tech-firm-11608027373\" class=\"icon none\">fined by the European Union<\/a>, are how they may mine and use personal data and\u00a0treat businesses who sell products and advertise on their platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon<br \/>\n        AMZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210331248\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.25%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       for example, is notorious for\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/amazon-scooped-up-data-from-its-own-sellers-to-launch-competing-products-11587650015\" class=\"icon none\">harvesting data about businesses<\/a>, which often must sell on its platform to survive, and creating competing products. It\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/amazon-tech-startup-echo-bezos-alexa-investment-fund-11595520249\" class=\"icon none\">coaxes small firms into acquisition talks<\/a>, only to obtain their proprietary information and mount strategies to drive them out of business.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook is in\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloombergquint.com\/gadfly\/facebook-has-only-itself-to-blame-for-drastic-antitrust-remedy\" class=\"icon none\">reputational hell<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/30\/technology\/facebook-google-russia.html\" class=\"icon none\">enabling Russian meddling in the 2016 election<\/a>, but such grievances would not be resolved by spinning off Instagram and WhatsApp.<\/p>\n<p>The FTC approved Facebook\u2019s acquisition of Instagram in 2012, when it was only a photo and video sharing service and WhatsApp in 2014, when it was only a text messaging and voice over the internet service. Since then, Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook have integrated\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-12-10\/facebook-antitrust-suit-breaking-up-would-be-hard-to-do\" class=\"icon none\">back end functions<\/a>\u2014servers, software and networking\u2014making the three difficult and costly to disentangle.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>Facebook\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingcharts.com\/digital\/social-media-107791\" class=\"icon none\">popularity among young people is declining<\/a>, and its\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/facebook-q3-2020-earnings-204642328.html\" class=\"icon none\">user base appears to have plateaued and may soon decline<\/a>. Perceived anticonservative biases at\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2020\/06\/29\/what-is-parler-app-social-media-conservatives-who-owns-free-echo-facebook-twitter-verified-faq\/\" class=\"icon none\">Facebook and Twitter are driving right-leaning users to Parler<\/a>, but that trend defies network effects and may not hold up if President Donald Trump recedes in prominence.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Central_to_future\"><\/span>Central to future<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Facebook is\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-12-10\/facebook-breakup-would-demolish-zuckerberg-s-social-media-empire\" class=\"icon none\">increasingly reliant on Instagram for revenue growth<\/a>. Although WhatsApp currently contributes little to the bottom line, both apps, in combination, are central to Facebook\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook has been building shopping and payment features into Instagram and customer-business interactions capabilities into WhatsApp. Linked together through Facebook those could be\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-12-15\/facebook-building-tool-to-let-fans-pay-celebrities-for-face-time\" class=\"icon none\">amalgamated<\/a>\u00a0into a powerful competitor for Amazon and Walmart<br \/>\n        WMT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207374728\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.47%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span>\n      <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s very pro-competitive and could provide the American answer, so far lacking, to China\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/abacus\/who-what\/what\/article\/3028242\/wechat-app-does-everything\" class=\"icon none\">WeCha<\/a>t<br \/>\n        700,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/204605823\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+3.14%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       which permits all those functions and more. Add Libra or a similar invention, which would create hard-currency-backed digital money and payments system, and Facebook could offer an American answer to China\u2019s Alipay<br \/>\n        BABA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/201948298\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.49%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and other fintech competitors.<\/p>\n<p>Congress, the broader Washington establishment, and the general public have good reason to dislike Mark Zuckerberg and other internet magnates, However, divesting Instagram and WeChat could ultimately destroy Facebook, much as spinning off regional telephone companies marked the\u00a0beginning of the end of the original AT&amp;T<br \/>\n        T,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203165245\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.86%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span>\n      <\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-12-12\/tech-giants-gird-for-business-threats-under-strict-new-eu-laws\" class=\"icon none\">EU competition authorities<\/a>, instead, are focusing on\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/europes-new-privacy-law-will-change-the-web-and-more\/\" class=\"icon none\">compelling these companies to clearly explain to users how they intend to exploit their personal data and obtain their consent<\/a>. Refrain from mining data and squeezing smaller businesses on their platforms and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-12-14\/tech-giants-could-face-fines-as-high-as-10-annual-revenue\" class=\"icon none\">treat all products on an equal footing with their own offerings<\/a>. And be\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-12-10\/facebook-google-risk-fines-up-to-6-revenue-under-new-eu-rules\" class=\"icon none\">more proactive about taking down harmful content<\/a>\u2014and keeping it out in the first place\u2014when identified by authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Americans have a long history of disliking monopolies going back to the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2020-12-12\/the-boston-tea-party-s-warning-for-facebook-and-google?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_term=201214&amp;utm_campaign=sharetheview\" class=\"icon none\">Boston Tea Party<\/a>\u2014the cargo the patriots threw overboard belonged to the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonteapartyship.com\/the-tea-act\" class=\"icon none\">East India Trading Company<\/a>.
