We\u2019ve heard some variation of\u00a0Deadpool 3<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0still being rated R and\u00a0being in development at Marvel Studios\u00a0over the years, but there\u2019s still always a patina of disbelief to the idea that the Merc with a Mouth and his bloody, bloody antics could make his way to the family-friendly Marvel Cinematic Universe. But Marvel chief\u00a0Kevin Feige<\/strong> is here to confirm:\u00a0Deadpool 3<\/em> will be a part of the MCU.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Collider<\/a> ahead of the Disney+ debut of\u00a0WandaVision<\/em>, Feige confirmed that the R-rated\u00a0Deadpool 3<\/em> will be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe \u2014 once it finally begins filming. Screenwriting duo\u00a0Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Wendy Molyneux<\/strong>\u00a0are currently hard at work on the script<\/a> with Reynolds overseeing, but\u00a0Deadpool 3<\/em> likely won\u2019t begin production until 2022 at the earliest, Feige said:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan\u2019s overseeing a script right now\u2026 It will not be [filming] this year. Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor. We\u2019ve got a number of things we\u2019ve already announced that we now have to make, but it\u2019s exciting for it to have begun. Again, a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This is our first concrete confirmation that the Deadpool character, as played by Reynolds, will be part of the MCU, as opposed to the 20th Century Fox Marvel universe that housed the\u00a0X-Men<\/em>-related properties. But the fourth wall-breaking Deadpool has always been somewhat\u00a0adjacent to the\u00a0X-Men<\/em> universe, interacting with the characters of those films purely on a metatextual level (and for the sake of countless Hugh Jackman heartthrob jokes). So Deadpool may very well slide in nicely to the MCU, and potentially provide a launch pad for the\u00a0X-Men to be introduced into the Marvel universe.<\/p>\n

But we likely won\u2019t see this happen until 2023 at the earliest. As Feige said, Reynolds is a busy guy and won\u2019t be able to start filming\u00a0Deadpool 3<\/em> until at least 2022, and Marvel Studios is pretty booked for the next couple MCU films, including the currently-shooting\u00a0Thor: Love and Thunder<\/em> and\u00a0Spider-Man 3<\/em>, and upcoming productions like\u00a0Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Black Panther 2<\/em>, and\u00a0Captain Marvel 2<\/em>. The Merc with a Mouth may have to hold his tongue for a few more years.<\/p>\n
