\nWill this case ever really go away?\u00a0JonBen\u00e9t Ramsey<\/strong>\u2018s family hopes not \u2014 at least not until the truth is discovered.<\/p>\n

The eyes of the entire world turned to Boulder, Colorado in 1996 when the body of the 6-year-old beauty queen was discovered in her home the day after Christmas. Her skull had been fractured from a blow, and she had been strangled \u2014 a garrote was found still around her neck. Perhaps the most shocking aspect of the case was, despite the wattage of the spotlight, the real story remained \u2014 and remains to this day \u2014 hidden from view.<\/p>\n

Who killed JonBen\u00e9t is a true crime question for the ages \u2014 though one her father,\u00a0John Ramsey<\/strong>, now 77 years old, hopes to have answered in his lifetime (sadly his wife, Patsy Ramsey<\/strong>, did not live to see the case solved \u2014 she passed away back in 2006).<\/p>\n

John\u2019s most recent hope comes from a brand new documentary called JonBen\u00e9t Ramsey: What Really Happ<\/a>ened?<\/em>\u00a0on the new Discovery+<\/strong> streaming service. He and his son\u00a0John Andrew Ramsey<\/strong>, JonBen\u00e9t\u2019s half-brother, told\u00a0USA Today<\/em> on the occasion of the doc\u2019s release they hoped another look would \u201ckeep the case alive\u201d:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re hoping somebody will come forward with some information that will be helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

So what can viewers find in the doc?<\/p>\n

It turns out homicide detective Lou Smit<\/strong> kept an audio diary as he worked tirelessly to try to solve the murder. While he too did not live to see the case cracked, his tapes may yet move the investigation forward. Previously unheard excerpts of the audiotapes will be presented in the doc, along with context from Smit\u2019s son and daughter. John said:<\/p>\n

\u201cI was not aware of the audiotapes. It\u2019s a real asset to solving this case, still.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

For John, solving this case isn\u2019t just about getting justice for his murdered daughter, but for himself and his late wife as well. He recalled painfully:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe death of JonBen\u00e9t took away my desire to live for a while. The actions of the police took away my ability to live normally and that, to some extent, continued for a long time in the way we were treated and assaulted.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He says the police had the parents in their crosshairs from the beginning \u2014 and their misplaced focus kept them from finding the real killer:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe police drew a conclusion immedia<\/a>tely that day, the next day and then tried to find the evidence to prove it. And the evidence they were finding was, unfortunately for them, contradictory to their conclusion. But they never admitted that and struggled with that for years and spent millions of taxpayers\u2019 dollars trying to prove otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Remarking on Detective Smit\u2019s commitment to the case, John Andrew points out:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he had thought for a moment that Dad or (his late wife) Patsy were capable of this murder, he would have pursued them to the end of this Earth. Lou was a true victims\u2019 advocate, and that\u2019s all you can ask for.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Eventually, the Boulder District Attorney\u2019s Office did officially exonerate the entire Ramsey family, including their son Burke Ramsey<\/strong>, whose infamously awkward TV interviews led many to suspect he knew more than he was telling. That was all the way in 2008, two years after Patsy passed away.<\/p>\n

John admitted he could not watch the full documentary because that time in his life was so \u201chard to revisit,\u201d but if YOU want to dive back into one of the most famous unsolved cases of all time, JonBen\u00e9t Ramsey: What Really Happened?<\/em> is streaming now.<\/p>\n
