HBO\u2019s\u00a0The Batman<\/em> <\/strong>prequel TV series<\/a> focused on the Gotham PD<\/em><\/strong> has a new showrunner: Joe Barton<\/strong>, writer and creator of the series Giri\/Haji<\/em>, as well as the writer of the horror film\u00a0The Ritual<\/em>.\u00a0Terence Winter<\/strong>, a writer on\u00a0The Sopranos\u00a0<\/em>and creator of\u00a0Boardwalk Empire<\/em>, was previously attached as showrunner but departed the project late last year.<\/p>\n

Multiple sources are reporting the news<\/a> that Joe Barton is now the showrunner on the HBO Max series about the Gotham PD<\/em>. The show remains untitled at the moment, but the series is meant to be a prequel to the upcoming Matt Reeves<\/strong>\u2018 film\u00a0The Batman<\/em>. While\u00a0The Batman<\/em> takes place after Batman has already been established as a figure in Gotham City, the HBO Max series will take place right when the Dark Knight is starting to surface in the city, and deals with how a corrupt police force reckons with such a figure.\u00a0There\u2019s precedent in the world of\u00a0Batman<\/em> comics for such a story \u2013 the excellent comic series\u00a0Gotham Central<\/em> dealt with how a group of Gotham detectives works in a city where there also happ<\/a>ens to be a crime-fighting vigilante on the loose.
\nThe Batman<\/em> director Matt Reeves spoke a little about the show last year, saying the show follows one corrupt cop in particular, adding<\/a>: \u201cThe story is actually a battle for his soul. He\u2019s a cop over generations and the history of corruption in Gotham is enormous and goes back many years.As you realize there\u2019s this myth-building in the background, you are in a new place with these characters, some of whom will touch on that you may have seen from the comics and others totally new.\u201d At the time of Reeves\u2019 comments, the series was in the hands of\u00a0Terence Winter, who wrote the script for\u00a0The Wolf of Wall Street<\/em>, and has been involved with several HBO shows, including\u00a0The Sopranos<\/em> and\u00a0Boardwalk Empire.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

However, Winter left the show, with reports indicating that \u201cWinter\u2019s vision for the drama did not match what Reeves and other producers had in mind.\u201d Now, Barton is at the helm. I\u2019ve not seen Barton\u2019s series\u00a0Giri\/Haji<\/em>, so I can\u2019t comment much on that. However, I have seen\u00a0The Ritual<\/em>, which Barton wrote. It\u2019s an enjoyable horror film but it\u2019s hard to compare it to the world of Batman, aside from the film\u2019s dark and moody atmosphere.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no word yet on when we might see the Gotham PD<\/em> show, but\u00a0The Batman<\/em> release date isn\u2019t until\u00a0March 4, 2022, so it might not be for a while.<\/p>\n
