From the right: Stop Comparing Riots<\/strong><\/p>\n

The fact that \u201ca lot of people seem very keen on litigating whether the attack on the Capitol was worse than last summer\u2019s rioting\u201d sends a \u201cdepressing\u201d message about this country\u2019s \u201cpolitical polarization,\u201d laments National Review\u2019s Robert VerBruggen<\/a>. \u201cBoth events were horrific, with consequences that will last for years,\u201d so comparing the tragedies to see which side wins should be the least of both parties\u2019 worries. During the summer\u2019s violence, \u201csomewhere around 20 people died,\u201d and \u201cthe places that suffered the riots will take years to recover economically.\u201d Meanwhile at the Capitol, \u201cFive people died, including a police officer.\u201d Looking at the big picture, \u201cthese were both failures at all levels, and our first priority should be to make sure neither happ<\/a>ens again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prosecutor: No, Trump Didn\u2019t Incite<\/strong><\/p>\n

At The Wall Street Journal, former Washington federal prosecutor Jeffrey Scott Shapiro argues<\/a> that whatever he did, President Trump \u201cdidn\u2019t commit incitement or any other crime.\u201d Under the relevant Supreme Court precedent, \u201cmere advocacy\u201d of violence, not \u201cdirected to inciting or producing imminent lawless action . . . likely to incite or produce such action,\u201d is protected speech under the US Constitution. Last week, \u201cthe president didn\u2019t mention violence on Wednesday, much less provoke or incite it. He said, \u2018I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.\u2019\u200a\u201d Nor did any \u201cpublic disturbance\u201d occur when Trump spoke. Bottom line: Inflaming public sentiment \u201cdoes not satisfy the elements of any criminal offense.\u201d<\/p>\n

Neocon: They Took Don Literally \u2014 Disastrously<\/strong><\/p>\n

At Commentary, John Podhoretz flags <\/a>the hole in Salena Zito\u2019s \u201cthey take him seriously but not literally\u201d explanation for why people support President Trump: The problem with his \u201cwildly and massively irresponsible rhetoric\u201d is that some followers \u201ctook him seriously and literally \u2014 and the real world consequences are staring us in the face.\u201d It includes the roughly \u201c75,000 voters in Georgia\u201d who bought his \u201crigged election\u201d talk and so \u201crefused to come out for the runoffs \u2014 thus handing Senate control to the Democrats\u201d as well as the \u201cmonstrous, noxious, anti-American thugs and goons and marauders\u201d who assaulted the Capitol last week in a \u201cpopulist version of [Charles] Manson\u2019s helter skelter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: 2020 Ain\u2019t Over Yet<\/strong><\/p>\n

You thought 2020 was crazy? \u201cHang on,\u201d warns Victor Davis Hanson at American Greatness<\/a>, for an even crazier 2021. After the \u201cunchecked violence in the Capitol\u201d last week, \u201ca weird cancel mob formed.\u201d Never mind that \u201cleftist protesters were once with impunity beating on the doors of the Supreme Court to get in during and after the Kavanaugh hearings.\u201d Liberals called \u201cfor the complete weaponization of social media<\/a> and the permanent banning\u201d of President Trump and other conservatives. \u201cProgressives are no longer the watchdogs breaking up trusts. They are the trusts breaking up watchdogs,\u201d ensuring \u201cthey alone can control, censor, and cancel incorrect communications over the publicly owned airspace.\u201d And their task is \u201cmade easier by a COVID-stricken, quarantined and financially strapped population.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the left: Cuo\u2019s Vaccine Debacle<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gov. Cuomo, writes Ross Barkan at Jacobin<\/a>, \u201chas always embodied a dark irony of the COVID-19 pandemic\u201d: Though he has presided over the highest number of deaths in the nation and destroyed the Empire State\u2019s economy, \u201che has won hysterical praise from many of the nation\u2019s leading news<\/a>papers, magazines and television shows.\u201d His latest ignored failure: \u201cWith a vaccine here, he is again proving his lack of fitness to lead New York through the worst crisis it has faced in modern history. For weeks, unused vaccine doses have sat in freezers, with some even being thrown out. After imposing extremely complex and rigid guidelines over who can receive a vaccine, Cuomo threatened health care providers with million-dollar fines if they didn\u2019t follow the rules he had created for who can get a shot first.\u201d Even if his premises about distribution are right, the debacle shows he\u2019s wasted \u201cmonths to prepare for what\u2019s happening now.\u201d <\/p>\n
