\u201cI miss Alex.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first \u201cJeopardy!\u201d episode since Alex Trebek\u2019s death aired Monday, with Ken Jennings, introduced as the first in a series<\/a> of interim guest hosts, barely able to hold back tears when speaking of the late host.<\/p>\n

\u201cSharing this stage with Alex Trebek was one of the greatest honors of my life,\u201d he said Monday during the show\u2019s opening<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Even without the man who brought the wit and poise to the show for nearly 37 years, \u201cJeopardy!\u201d went on business as usual Monday. Jennings, who holds the record for the longest \u201cJeopardy!\u201d winning streak, opened the show with a monologue dedicated to Trebek \u2014 nearly choking up in the process.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot many things in life are perfect, but Alex did this job pretty much perfectly for more than 36 years \u2014 and it was even better up close,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe were dazzled by his intelligence, his charm, his grace \u2014 really, there\u2019s no other word for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLike all \u2018Jeopardy!\u2019 fans, I miss Alex. Very much. And I thank him for everything he did for all of us,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Jennings, however, said that the show had to go on \u2014 despite Trebek\u2019s death in November at 80 after a battle with pancreatic cancer \u2014 since there are tens of millions of fans \u201cwho love this show.\u201d Trebek\u2019s emotional last episode aired Friday, filmed just 10 days before he died. The episode included a montage of Trebek\u2019s greatest moments<\/a> over the years, which moved many fans to tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s be totally clear: No one will ever replace the great Alex Trebek, but we can honor him by playing the game<\/a> he loved,\u201d he concluded, before getting into Monday night\u2019s game. <\/p>\n

But it was not lost upon the 74-time champ that fans would rather see Trebek man the buzzer, as he did for more than 8,200 episodes since 1984. <\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, I\u2019m with the audience,\u201d the 46-year-old said in a promo released before the show<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t want me out here. I want to see Alex out here. I know exactly how they feel when they see anybody else behind this lectern.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just happ<\/a>y to fill in and help out,\u201d Jennings, who won the title of Greatest of All Time last year, said.<\/p>\n

Fans seemed to agree after watching Monday\u2019s episode, writing<\/a>: \u201cWatching it right now and I\u2019m not going to lie but it feels weird\u201d and \u201cWow. This is gonna take some<\/a> time to get used to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jennings has served as a consulting producer for \u201cJeopardy!\u201d this season, which saw him present special video categories, assist with contestants and other aspects of the show. He\u2019s first up in \u201ca series of interim guest hosts from within the \u2018Jeopardy!\u2019 family,\u201d which also possibly includes Katie Couric.<\/p>\n

While Jennings said it was \u201csurreal\u201d to be hosting the show, Trebek gave him some advice if he were ever to replace him as host in any capacity.<\/p>\n

\u201cI spoke to him on the phone actually the weekend he passed and he was \u2014 he was frail but he was still very much Alex,\u201d Jennings said on \u201cGood Morning America.\u201d<\/a> \u201cI remember him just being very confident in me to be a guest host if he ever needed that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rumors have swirled that Jennings was being \u201cgroomed\u201d to take over the show, and his name was tossed in the ring as a potential permanent replacement \u2014 fueled further when he preemptively apologized for past \u201cinsensitive\u201d tweets ahead of his hosting debut. He\u2019s also the host of new series \u201cThe Chase\u201d along with his fellow \u201cJeopardy! The Greatest of All Time\u201d tournament competitors James Holzhauer and Brad Rutter.<\/p>\n

But Jennings said in that last conversation, Trebek reminded him that \u201cthe host is not the star of \u2018Jeopardy!\u2019 \u201d noting that the beloved host \u201calways made it about the players and about the competition.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just hard to imagine that in the TV landscape today, a star of his size saying, \u2018Hey, the game is not about you\u2019 \u2014 but that was great advice.\u201d<\/p>\n
