Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roximately 89 million followers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Twitter<br \/>\n        TWTR,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203180645\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-6.41%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       announced Trump\u2019s permanent suspension after trading hours Friday and it fell 6% before trading started Monday morning. That blotted out approximately $2.5 billion in market value, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-twitter-stocks-trump\/twitter-shares-dive-7-after-trump-account-suspension-idUSKBN29G0XG\" class=\"icon none\">according to Reuters.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>That tallies with one analyst estimated from 2017, which said that Trump <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2017\/08\/17\/trump-worth-to-twitter\/\" class=\"icon none\">generated an estimated $2 billion<\/a> for the site by bringing in users, keeping them on the site to read what he had to say \u2014 and scrolling across ads in the process. <\/p>\n<p>By mid-day, shares were trimming losses, down almost 7% after bouncing off a low of approximately 11%. Twitter shares closed Monday over 6% off.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s market cap closed Monday at $38.319 billion, down from $40.944 billion at Friday\u2019s close, according to FactSet data. That\u2019s a $2.625 billion drop.<\/p>\n<p>For Mark Shmulik, internet analyst for AllianceBernstein, Twitter\u2019s lower stock market opening Monday \u201ccertainly feels like a bit of overreaction.\u201d He added, \u201cMost advertisers won\u2019t touch anything Trump related.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>And that was even before the violence at the U.S. Capitol, he said. On Sunday, PGA of America cut its ties with the Trump Organization, saying it wouldn\u2019t hold the 2022 PGA Championship at Trump\u2019s Bedminster, N.J. golf course. <\/p>\n<p>In Twitter\u2019s 2020 third quarter, its revenue was $936.2 million, up from $823.7 million in the same quarter one year earlier. A Twitter spokeswoman declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Trump\u2019s absence might be Twitter\u2019s long-term gain, Shmulik and other market observers said. <\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>Without Twitter conversations constantly occupied by Trump\u2019s tweets or reactions to his tweets, Shmulik said, more advertisers could increasingly look at the site as safe for their brand, which may bump up ad prices. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAssuming that\u2019s the case, there\u2019s an argument over long term, this is a net positive to the company,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Facebook on Thursday banned Trump at least until the end of his term. Facebook<br \/>\n        FB,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205064656\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-4.01%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       shares closed down roughly 4% on the day Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The downward pressure on Twitter shares could be happening because the market could be anticipating too much of an exodus from the site, according to Shmulik. <\/p>\n<p>Other market observers questioned just how many Twitter users come and go based on Trump\u2019s presence. \u201cWe have always wondered how much of\u00a0Twitter\u2019s\u00a0growth came from the\u00a0\u2018Trump Bump,\u2019\u201d MoffettNathanson analyst Michael Nathanson wrote in an investor note. <\/p>\n<p>Twitter stock will ultimately rebound \u2014 just like its user base will if there\u2019s any sort of consumer decampment from the site, according to Sandra Matz, a professor at Columbia Business School studying consumer behavior and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> companies.<\/p>\n<p>There may well be consumers on the right who leave altogether, but Twitter may pick up consumers on the left who endorse the company\u2019s ban, she said.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also the gap between people\u2019s intentions and their actions to account for. <\/p>\n<p>Though some right-leaning Twitter users may be furious with the platform now, if typical consumer behavior applies, Matz said, that anger will fade for many and revert back to the formed habit of checking out what\u2019s been said in the site. \u201cYou have this strong emotion reaction,\u201d said Matz. \u201cAs long as your strong emotional reaction conflicts with convenience, most people don\u2019t take action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So what comes next for Twitter and other tech companies? More regulation on content and liability under President-Elect Joe Biden, and a Democratic-controlled House of Representatives and U.S. Senate?<\/p>\n<p>Shares in Twitter are down 11% year-to-date in the first trading days of 2021.
