Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>s, perhaps to give themselves something to look forward to.<\/p>\n<p> People are still traveling by plane at a fraction of the rate they were prior to the pandemic. While air travel surged to the highest levels since March during the holiday season, it has since fallen back to the low levels that have become commonplace during the global scourge. On Thursday, just under 772,000 travelers passed through <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/coronavirus\/passenger-throughput\" class=\"icon none\">Transportation Security Administration checkpoints<\/a>, down from more than 2 million people a year ago.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       With coronavirus cases still setting records across the country and overseas, most people are hesitant to travel right now \u2014 if not banned from doing so altogether, depending on the location. But as the vaccine is rolled out, that could change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe vaccine rollout is critical to airlines,\u201d said Edward<br \/>\nRussell, an airlines reporter with travel-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> outlet Skift. \u201cExecutives at<br \/>\nmost major airlines have said they do not expect a significant recovery in air<br \/>\ntravel until the vaccine is widely available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And there\u2019s evidence that some people are so optimistic about the prospects of future travel and the vaccine that they\u2019re already booking spring and summer travel. United Airlines<br \/>\n        UAL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205037281\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.36%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       for instance, reported last month that its bookings for the third quarter of 2021 are only down 40%, compared with the 70% decline in bookings in December and January. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile it will take time for the vaccine to be widely distributed, the Company\u2019s confidence is even stronger in the recovery and the trajectory of the rebound in 2021 and beyond,\u201d United<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/ix?doc=\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/100517\/000110465920134806\/tm2038338d1_8k.htm\" class=\"icon none\"> said in a regulatory filing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So how will this expected resurgence affect the cost of air<br \/>\ntravel, now and in the months ahead? Here\u2019s what the experts had to say:<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Air_travel_is_much_cheaper_these_days_%E2%80%94_for_most_destinations\"><\/span>Air travel is much cheaper these days \u2014 for most destinations<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>While travel experts\u2019 assessments differ as to how much<br \/>\nairfares have fallen over the course of the pandemic, the consensus is that the<br \/>\ncost to travel the skies is down.<\/p>\n<p>Overall last year, the \u201cgood-deal\u201d price on round-trip domestic flights in the U.S. was $220, which was 25% lower than in 2019, said Adit Damodaran, economist at travel website\u00a0Hopper. \u201cIn the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic in Spring 2020, roundtrip airfare dropped around $60 with lower travel demand,\u201d Damodaran said. \u201cSimilar to past years, we saw price increase into the summer, fall during the autumn shoulder season, and rise again into the holidays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, an analysis from Cowen &amp; Co. found that airfares on some domestic routes were up 1.2% for the week of Dec. 28. Price fluctuations have become more rare as the pandemic has worn on. \u201cSince the early days of the pandemic, pricing has\u00a0stabilized\u00a0to a degree as airlines have cut capacity,\u201d Russell said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n              \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n        media-object\n        type-InsetPullQuote\n          inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n        article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n          article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span><br \/>\n        Airfares were down roughly 25% in 2020, according to researchers at Hopper<br \/>\n        <span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       In the face of low demand, airlines have cut the number of flights they operate and have grounded aircraft. The reduced supply of seats available for purchase, as a result, has helped buoy prices.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a different scenario, though, when it comes to international flights. \u201cAirfares\u00a0to Europe, Africa, and Asia have generally been higher than pre-pandemic levels,\u201d said Willis Orlando, member operations specialist at travel website Scott\u2019s Cheap Flights. From time to time deals on international flights from major U.S. cities to European hubs like Paris and Barcelona on budget airlines have cropped up, Orlando added, but the widespread deals that occurred relatively frequently pre-pandemic \u201chave been super rare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Flights to international locations remain more expensive in part because of the myriad restrictions on travel that governments have imposed to curb the spread of COVID-19. <\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Airfare_will_get_more_expensive_later_this_year\"><\/span>Airfare will get more expensive later this year<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Travel experts predict that the cost to travel by air will<br \/>\nincrease throughout 2021 as the pandemic subsides. Hopper, for instance,<br \/>\nexpects airfare prices to rise on average by 6% each month starting in March<br \/>\nbefore leveling off in the summer. <\/p>\n<p>The reduced capacity at airlines right now will contribute to rising prices. Even though airlines are seeing much higher demand already for travel this year than they did last year, they won\u2019t be quick to add more itineraries.  Most airlines have relaxed their cancellation policies, in many cases offering customers vouchers if they choose to forgo a trip because of concerns related to the pandemic. So bookings made now may not still be around come this summer if COVID-19 cases remain elevated.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith no cancellation penalties there is uncertainty whether these bookings will stay if the vaccine rollout does not proceed as fast as hoped,\u201d Russell said.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, travelers will be competing for fewer seats on flights for some time to come. Another unknown factor: The large number of people who received vouchers for canceled travel in 2020. Most airlines distributed vouchers to travelers who proactively canceled trips last year \u2014 but in many cases, those vouchers came with expiration dates. Depending on how many flights are available and how many people cash in those vouchers, prices could be driven higher at some airlines.<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n              \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n        media-object\n        type-InsetPullQuote\n          inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n        article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n          article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span><br \/>\n         We\u2019re not to the point yet where we feel confident publishing nonrefundable fare deals to places like Europe or Japan that are currently closed to American travelers.<br \/>\n        <span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>        <small><br \/>\n          <span class=\"inset-author article__inset__pullquote__author\">\u2014  Daniel Burnham, senior member operations specialist at Scott\u2019s Cheap Flights  <\/span><br \/>\n        <\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       Domestic air travel \u2014 as well as travel to nearby international locations such as Canada and Mexico \u2014 is expected to come back sooner than more far-flung destinations. <\/p>\n<p> \u201cWe\u2019re not to the point yet where we feel confident publishing<br \/>\nnonrefundable fare deals to places like Europe or Japan that are currently<br \/>\nclosed to American travelers,\u201d said Daniel Burnham, senior member operations<br \/>\nspecialist at Scott\u2019s Cheap Flights. \u201cIt\u2019s certainly possible the public health<br \/>\nsituation will have improved by June or July and that these popular<br \/>\ndestinations will relax their immigration requirements, but we\u2019re still making<br \/>\nsure that we can conveniently change or cancel our summer plans just in case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That said, airlines may have some incentive to keep airfare<br \/>\naffordable in order to induce further demand if the interest cools after the<br \/>\ninitial wave of bookings seen right now. <\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"If_youre_booking_a_trip_read_the_fine_print\"><\/span>If you\u2019re booking a trip, read the fine print<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Virtually all airlines have relaxed their typical cancellation policies in response to the pandemic.
