“#Polyvinyl Pulling Beach Slang\u2019s Albums, Citing James Alex Abuse Allegations<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Polyvinyl Records<\/a> has announced that it has begun the process of pulling Beach Slang and Quiet Slang releases from distribution. In a statement to Billboard<\/em><\/a>, the label claimed that it \u201cstands in solidarity with those who have come forward about their experiences with James Alex of Beach Slang.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have said it before and it bears repeating: Our company operates on the core principle that everyone deserves to be treated with fairness and respect,\u201d the statement continues. \u201cActive accountability builds safer and healthier communities.\u201d It isn\u2019t the first time Polyvinyl has announced plans to take down music in response to allegations surrounding an artist on the label; it pulled music by PWR BTTM in 2017.<\/p>\n

Polyvinyl\u2019s remarks come one day after Alex\u2019s family released a statement responding to allegations of emotional abuse levied against Alex by Beach Slang\u2019s former manager Charlie Lowe. Alex\u2019s family stated that \u201cBeach Slang is over,\u201d adding that Alex \u201chas no plans to return to music.\u201d They also wrote that Alex has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, paranoid schizophrenia, and borderline personality disorder.<\/p>\n

Charlie Lowe had previously made allegations of abuse against Alex on Twitter<\/a>, referring to \u201cconstant\u201d abuse that resulted in her being diagnosed with complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD). Lowe expressed her dissatisfaction with Alex\u2019s family\u2019s statement, claiming that \u201cpast trauma isn\u2019t a blank check to perpetuate more trauma.\u201d<\/p>\n

At publication time, Beach Slang and Quiet Slang\u2019s Polyvinyl releases were still available on major streaming services. Pitchfork has reached out to Polyvinyl for further comment.<\/p>\n
