The scandal over the New York Times\u2019 botched \u201cCaliphate\u201d podcast widened Tuesday when dozens of public radio stations accused the Gray Lady of multiple \u201clapses in judgment\u201d while trying to stem the controversy.<\/p>\n

A letter posted on the website<\/a> of the Public Radio Program Directors Association called it \u201cextremely troubling\u201d that the host of the Times\u2019 podcast \u201cThe Daily,\u201d Michael Barbaro, contacted journalists to \u201cattempt to influence their coverage of errors made by Caliphate.\u201d<\/p>\n

The letter also faulted a \u201clack of transparency\u201d by the Times\u2019 Audio Division for \u201cnot disclosing the personal relationship between Barbaro and Lisa Tobin, [executive producer] of Caliphate, when you issued the 30-minute corrective interview that he hosted.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition, the letter criticized the Times\u2019 for reassigning star terrorism reporter Rukmini Callimachi<\/a> over the Caliphate debacle \u201cwhile giving greater visibility to her white male counterpart Andy Mills,\u201d who\u2019s been accused of inapp<\/a>ropriate behavior toward women while working earlier at New York public radio station WNYC.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe respectfully request that the New York Times acknowledges and takes responsibility for these lapses in judgment and takes steps to remedy them now and in the future,\u201d PRPD President Abby Goldstein wrote.<\/p>\n

The letter, dated Monday, was co-signed by representatives of 26 public radio stations that broadcast The Daily.<\/p>\n

Last month, Times executive editor Dean Baquet acknowledged an \u201cinstitutional failing\u201d in the 2018 production of Caliphate after an internal investigation found \u201cno corroboration\u201d for the claims of its main subject, who claimed to have committed atrocities as an ISIS terrorist.<\/p>\n

The man, who called himself Abu Huzayfah but whose real name is Shehroze Chaudhry, was arrested in Canada in September and charged with perpetrating a terrorist hoax.<\/p>\n

In addition to Baquet\u2019s mea culpa, the Times attached a damning, 440-word \u201cEditor\u2019s Note\u201d to its Caliphate web page.<\/p>\n

The Times also took the extraordinary steps of returning the Peabody Award that the 12-part series<\/a> won, as well its citation as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in international reporting.<\/p>\n

In response to Monday\u2019s letter, Times Assistant Managing Editor Sam Dolnick wrote back to Goldstein and said Barbaro \u201cdeeply regrets\u201d having \u201csent private messages through social media<\/a> that \u200bmay have \u200bmade recipients feel that their criticism was unwelcome.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEditors have discussed their expectations with him going forward,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

But Dolnick said the Times \u201cdid not see a need to make reference\u201d to the relationship between Barbaro and Tobin because his \u201caudio correction with Dean [Baquet]\u201d was \u201cnot an accountability interview, which Dean had already given to [National Public Radio].\u201d<\/p>\n

Dolnick also said the Times took the misconduct allegations against Mills \u201cvery seriously\u201d and called it \u201ca mistake\u201d to feature him in an episode of The Daily \u201cso soon after the editor\u2019s note\u201d regarding Caliphate.<\/p>\n

Barbaro and Mills both declined to comment, according to a Times story on the back-and-forth letters.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
