{"id":153317,"date":"2021-01-13T07:57:06","date_gmt":"2021-01-13T04:57:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/nyc-doe-to-scrap-gifted-and-talented-test-after-this-year\/"},"modified":"2021-01-13T07:57:06","modified_gmt":"2021-01-13T04:57:06","slug":"nyc-doe-to-scrap-gifted-and-talented-test-after-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/nyc-doe-to-scrap-gifted-and-talented-test-after-this-year\/","title":{"rendered":"#NYC DOE to scrap Gifted and Talented test after this year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#NYC DOE to scrap Gifted and Talented test after this year<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/01\/Board_of_Education.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Department of Education ended the suspense around the city\u2019s accelerated Gifted and Talented program Tuesday night, announcing that the single-test entry system will end after this year.<\/p>\n<p>Parents have been clamoring for answers on the coveted programs that admit kids based on standardized exam scores beginning at age 4.<\/p>\n<p>Backers say they give academically advanced kids the opportunity to learn at an <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ropriate pace and serve as an educational springboard.<\/p>\n<p>Detractors counter that the admissions model favors families of means who are better able to prepare for the test and that the exam serves as a poor marker of talent in young children.<\/p>\n<p>After months of uncertainty, the DOE revealed that it will offer the test this year and discontinue the current admissions format beyond that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will be the last year New York City administers this kindergarten test,\u201d said agency spokesperson Miranda Barbot. \u201cFor our youngest learners, we must\u00a0move forward and develop a system that reimagines\u00a0accelerated learning and enrichment.\u00a0At the same time, we\u00a0want to honor\u00a0the fact that families\u00a0have been planning kindergarten admissions for many months now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The racial makeup of the city\u2019s Gifted and Talented programs is central to the debate over its future.<\/p>\n<p>As with most of the city\u2019s competitive academic offerings, Asian students make up the largest proportion of enrollees.<\/p>\n<p>They account for 43 percent of Gifted and Talented students \u2014 followed by whites at 36 percent, Hispanics at 8 percent, and African-Americans at 6 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Critics argue that the programs are not reflective of the city\u2019s larger racial portrait and need to be remade.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, 40.6 percent of all kids in the nation\u2019s largest school system are Hispanic, followed by blacks at 25.5 percent, Asians at 16.2 percent, and whites at 15.1 percent.<\/p>\n<p>While Gifted and Talented programs were once commonplace across the city \u2014 including in low-income areas \u2014 they contracted sharply beginning in the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>Past beneficiaries have called for a restoration of advanced offerings at more city schools rather than their elimination.<\/p>\n<p>Others who support accelerated learning argue that the programs should remain intact while the admissions system undergoes reform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe there is a better way,\u201d Barbot said. \u201cWe will spend the next year engaging communities\u00a0around what kind of\u00a0programming\u00a0they would like to see\u00a0that is more inclusive, enriching, and truly supports the needs of\u00a0academically advanced\u00a0and diversely\u00a0talented\u00a0students at a more\u00a0appropriate age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Bill de Blasio and schools Chancellor Richard Carranza are likely to address the controversial move in a joint appearance Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>With de Blasio set to exit the mayoral stage next year, further retooling of the Gifted and Talented program will fall to his successor.\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
