Health minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin has previously said the country needs to vaccinate 181.5 million people, 67% of the population, to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thejakartapost.com\/news\/2020\/12\/29\/indonesia-to-strike-vaccine-deals-with-pfizer-astrazeneca.html\" class=\"icon none\">reach herd immunity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>President Joko Widodo is set to receive the first shot, which he said was to \u201cprovide assurance and trust to people that the vaccine is safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The government has said 1.3 million front-line health workers will be given priority and then regional governors \u2014 again to boost public confidence \u2014 followed by the wider population. Initially targeting 18-59 year-olds is a markedly different strategy to that of the U.S., the U.K. and much of Europe, where the most at risk are at the front of the queue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:<\/strong> Who will be given priority for the Pfizer\u2013BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine? <\/p>\n<p>Indonesia says it doesn\u2019t have enough data to vaccinate older people, as clinical trials for the Sinovac vaccine involve 18-59 year-olds, in contrast to other vaccines, which have shown to be effective in older groups too.  Senior health ministry official Dr. Siti Nadia Tarmizi said Indonesia wasn\u2019t \u201cbucking the trend\u201d and would wait for recommendations from the country\u2019s drug regulators before planning to vaccinate older people, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-indonesia-explaine\/explainer-why-indonesia-is-vaccinating-its-working-population-first-not-elderly-idUKKBN2990MX?edition-redirect=uk\" class=\"icon none\">Reuters reported<\/a>. Health officials also hope that targeting more <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>ly mobile groups will accelerate herd immunity.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Richard Moxon, founder of the Oxford Vaccine Group, told MarketWatch that the strategy \u201cmakes sense\u201d but said stronger evidence that COVID-19 vaccines can induce herd immunity was needed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:<\/strong> WHO official says no herd immunity in 2021 <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main issue is the current lack of evidence that COVID-19 vaccines induce immunity that reduces the spread of the virus (herd immunity).\u201d He added that trials to date haven\u2019t provided solid data on this, but that initial data from the vaccine developed by drug company AstraZeneca<br \/>\n        AZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203048482\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-0.34%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and the University of Oxford showed preliminary evidence that interruption of spread may result.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cOf course, it might be argued that prioritizing working-age adults rather than the elderly is economically advantageous, even if callous. But their strategy seems to be based on the premise of inducing herd immunity,\u201d said Moxon, who wasn\u2019t involved in the AstraZeneca\u2013Oxford shot but founded the group behind the vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>C.B. Kusmaryanto, a member of Indonesia\u2019s bioethics commission, said: \u201cDeveloped nations may start with the elderly, knowing that they have enough doses to cover the entire population, where that may not be the case for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are no good choices, there is only the least-bad choice. When Indonesia only has enough to vaccinate those most likely to infect others then that\u2019s who it should go to first,\u201d he was quoted as saying by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloombergquint.com\/politics\/younger-people-get-vaccines-first-in-indonesia-s-unusual-rollout\" class=\"icon none\">Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Coronavirus cases have surged in Indonesia, with new cases over the past week reaching a record 64,615, according to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center.<\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s fourth-most populous country has recorded 24,343 deaths in total, but more than 10% of those have come in the past two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Vicente Soriano, expert in infectious diseases and director of the UNIR Health <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a>s School and Medical Center in Madrid, said giving priority to limiting transmission over protecting the most vulnerable was \u201cethically a major issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to MarketWatch, he said: \u201cGiven that Indonesia is an overpopulated country where most individuals live in large families and gather together, forgetting to prioritize the oldest population will push them at increased risk \u2014 [particularly] if the youngest vaccinated people assume a false security on protection from infection, which has not been proved yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia has ordered 125.5 million doses of Sinovac\u2019s CoronaVac vaccine.
