Michael Pe\u00f1a<\/strong> will replace Stanley Tucci in Roland Emmerich<\/strong>\u2018s latest sci-fi epic.\u00a0Pe\u00f1a, alongside a handful of other actors, has boarded the\u00a0Moonfall<\/em><\/strong> cast, joining the star-studded ensemble which already includes Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, John Bradley, Eme Ikwuakor, Charlie Plummer and Donald Sutherland.<\/p>\n

Deadline reports that\u00a0Pe\u00f1a will take over the role of Tom Lopez, a wealthy car dealer married to Brian Harper\u2019s (Wilson) ex-wife, played by fellow cast newcomer\u00a0Carolina Bartczak<\/strong>.\u00a0Pe\u00f1a takes the role from Stanley Tucci, who had to exit the project due to government-imposed travel<\/a> restrictions banning U.K. flights to Canada.\u00a0Also boarding the\u00a0Moonfall<\/em> cast alongside\u00a0Pe\u00f1a and Bartczak are Maxim Roy, \u201ca hardened army captain whose fighting spirit helps position our heroes to save the world\u201d and Stephen Bogaert as\u00a0NASA Director Albert Hutchings.
\nPer Deadline,\u00a0Moonfall<\/em> is a space drama that kicks off when \u201ca mysterious force that knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact, and against all odds, a ragtag team launches an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love and risking everything to land on the lunar surface and save our planet from annihilation.\u201d<\/p>\n

A world-ending collision with the moon? A ragtag team that must stop it? Yep, it sounds like the kind of sci-fi disaster epic that has been Emmerich\u2019s bread and butter for the whole of his career. Emmerich, who pens the screenplay with\u00a0Harald Kloser and Spenser Cohen, can still draw stars to his projects thanks to the blockbuster power of\u00a0Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow<\/em>, and\u00a02012,\u00a0<\/em>even after disapp<\/a>ointments like 2019\u2019s\u00a0Midway<\/em>\u00a0(which \/Film reviewer Chris Evangelista called little more than a \u201cboring cartoon\u201d) or the forgettable\u00a0Independence Day<\/em> sequel. Still, it\u2019s cool to see Michael\u00a0Pe\u00f1a play a major character in a big Hollywood sci-fi blockbuster at least.<\/p>\n

Emmerich is producing\u00a0Moonfall<\/em> for his\u00a0Centropolis Entertainment banner with Kloser for Street Entertainment. Executive producers are Dennis Wang, James Wang, J.P. Pettinato, Marco Shepherd, Ute Emmerich, Carsten Lorenz, Stuart Ford, and SPG3 Entertainment\u2019s Karl Spoerri and Viviana Vezzani. Lionsgate is distributing the sci-fi flick.<\/p>\n

No word on when shooting on\u00a0Moonfall<\/em> is set to begin, but it\u2019s likely soon if one of the key roles has to be recast due to coronavirus travel restrictions. Lionsgate has also set\u00a0Moonfall<\/em>\u00a0for a fast-approaching theatrical release in 2022.<\/p>\n
