From the right: Biden\u2019s Big Tech Ties<\/strong><\/p>\n

President-elect Joe Biden is building an administration with ties to all five Big Tech firms that \u201cclamped down this week on President Trump and Parler, a social<\/a>-media site popular with conservatives,\u201d reports the Daily Caller\u2019s Chuck Ross<\/a>. At least 14 of his picks to serve in government or advise his transition have worked for App<\/a>le, Facebook, Twitter, Google or Amazon; his chief National Security Council spokesperson will be a former Twitter exec. The \u201csocial-media purge\u201d of Trump\u2019s accounts and blacklisting of Parler have \u201cstoked concerns that the major tech companies have too much control over communications platforms.\u201d And \u201cconservatives are especially concerned that they will be targeted even further under a Biden administration due to the tech companies\u2019 closer ties to Democrats.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: Free Speech Trumps Markets<\/strong><\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t censorship when corporations do it. So insist Big Tech apologists \u2014 the same people, National Review\u2019s David Harsanyi sighs<\/a>, who \u201cwant to compel everyone to buy state-mandated health insurance\u201d and \u201cforce nuns to buy abortifacients.\u201d Hypocrisy aside, when \u201cdominant corporate and cultural elites . . . collude to decide how people are allowed to interact, they engage, functionally, in censorship.\u201d That destroys the \u201cspirit\u201d of the First Amendment. So what\u2019s the fix? Harsanyi would prefer market competition to removing Section 230 liability protections for social-media platforms. Yet treating that law \u201cwith more reverence than the underlying values of free expression is its own shortsightedness.\u201d Yes, \u201cthe First Amendment doesn\u2019t guarantee anyone a Twitter account.\u201d But \u201ceveryone is aware, I assume, that Section 230 isn\u2019t in the Constitution, either?\u201d<\/p>\n

Historian: Don\u2019t Deep-Six Military History<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe study of war in history and political-science<\/a> departments is fading\u201d at US universities, Margaret MacMillan writes at Persuasion<\/a> \u2014 even though \u201cwar remains one of the events \u2014 along with revolution, famine, financial collapse and, as we are learning again, pandemics \u2014 that change the course of history.\u201d She fears that \u201chorror at the phenomenon itself has affected universities\u2019 willingness to treat it as a subject for scholarship.\u201d And noting that \u201cwars can bring unintended benefits\u201d can bring hostility, though \u201cnobody would say that the study of imperialism, racism or famine means that we think those are good things.\u201d The left sees the field as \u201ctoo focused on elites and complicit with hierarchy and oppression,\u201d so elite universities are dropping even highly popular classes. But if we don\u2019t study war, \u201cwe may fail to recognize warning signs when the next conflict brews, as it will.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iconoclast: How Censorship Helps Vlad<\/strong><\/p>\n

It says something that Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny is worried about how Big Tech has \u201cganged up on Trump and his most radical followers,\u201d warns Bloomberg Opinion\u2019s Leonid Bershidsky<\/a>. Such moves could lead to Navalny\u2019s \u201cown de-platforming in Russia, where he has no access to state-controlled media and relies on mostly US-based social networks \u2014 YouTube, Facebook, Twitter \u2014 to spread his message.\u201d As Navalny pointed out, Twitter\u2019s excuse (violent messages) is especially laughable since \u201cI get death threats here every day for many years, and Twitter doesn\u2019t ban anyone.\u201d American liberal commentators predictably claimed Navalny just \u201cdoesn\u2019t get it,\u201d as Bershidsky says, but if Navalny \u201chasn\u2019t earned the right to be heard as an expert on such matters, I don\u2019t know who has.\u201d<\/p>\n

Libertarian: The Worst-Run US Cities<\/strong><\/p>\n

With US cities seeing vast out-migration, Kristin Tate at The Hill considers<\/a> the eight worst-run as \u201cranked with markers like costs of living, education, poverty and crime\u201d: New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Washington, Portland, Oakland and Chicago. Many \u201cuse the most dollars per capita,\u201d and resulting taxes bring \u201cgrowing costs of living\u201d \u2014 but they also feature \u201cfailing school systems\u201d and raging \u201cviolent-crime spikes.\u201d The dysfunction may follow the \u00e9migr\u00e9s: \u201cFormer residents of New York or Los Angeles must ask themselves\u201d if they\u2019ll \u201ckeep voting for the same public policy that caused them to leave\u201d \u2014 or ruin the likes of Nashville.<\/p>\n
