Meet Javicia Leslie, TV\u2019s new \u201cBatwoman.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leslie replaces Ruby Rose, who starred as Kate Kane, aka Batwoman, but abruptly departed The CW\u2019s freshman superhero series<\/a> for undisclosed reasons in May \u2014 leaving the show without a center.<\/p>\n

When it returns Sunday (at 8 p.m.) for Season 2, \u201cBatwoman\u201d will follow new character Ryan Wilder (Leslie).<\/p>\n

\u201cI think [audiences are] going to love the character,\u201d Leslie, 33, tells The Post.\u00a0 \u201cRyan is a very relatable character, and I look forward to fans seeing themselves in her. I want her to show everybody that anyone can be a superhero.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leslie, who has a background in Muay Thai and does many of her own stunts on the show, is best known for \u201cGod Friended Me\u201d and BET\u2019s \u201cThe Family Business.\u201d She says she did not feel a sense of pressure in taking up the Batwoman mantle.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, you just come from the words and the imagination,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s really what it\u2019s about \u2014 taking the\u00a0 time to allow yourself to be a kid again. When you come from that perspective, there\u2019s no pressure. I\u2019m used to the type of work and ethic that comes with taking on a role like this. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I get to fly in the air for a living, I get to have fun,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s my life. It\u2019s honestly an honor. So really, I just go to work every day happ<\/a>y.\u201d<\/p>\n

Season 1 of \u201cBatwoman\u201d followed Kate Kane (Rose), Bruce Wayne\u2019s cousin who rose up to protect the streets of Gotham City. To accommodate Rose\u2019s departure, Season 2 isn\u2019t pretending that Kate never existed, nor is it recasting the character. Sunday\u2019s season premiere, \u201cWhatever Happened to Kate Kane?,\u201d follows Kate\u2019s allies and tech support team Luke Fox (Camrus Johson) and Mary Hamilton (Nicole Kang) as they react to the fact that she\u2019s missing.<\/p>\n

It also introduces Ryan (Leslie), a spirited young woman to whom life has dealt a rough hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s loyal to a fault,\u201d says Leslie. \u201cShe\u2019s always willing to fight for people \u2014 but it\u2019s hard when she also has vengeance, so she has to learn to put that aside. What makes her different from Kate [and from other Batwoman characters] is her past. She doesn\u2019t come from a prestigious or wealthy family [but] from a part of Gotham that hasn\u2019t been represented yet in the superhero universe. I look at Ryan as the underdog\u2026a representative for those that don\u2019t have voices.\u201d<\/p>\n

Like Kate, Ryan is a lesbian with a passion for justice, but that\u2019s where their similarities end. Ryan has a criminal record (she was briefly incarcerated for a crime she did not commit) \u2014 but, regardless of her innocence, it\u2019s hard for her to find a job.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When circumstances put the Batwoman suit into her hands, she gets a new opportunity.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was exciting and really emotional, because I know no other black actress or actor who\u2019s put on the bat suit yet for a live-action project,\u201d she says about donning the suit for the first time. So it was really cool to be a part of that journey, especially as a person who grew up watching \u2018Batman.\u2019 To know\u00a0 that I\u2019m a part of that family is something that I\u2019ll be able to keep with me for the rest of my life, and that was really exciting to know that that\u2019s a legacy I\u2019ll leave.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was also super-fun because doing superhero shows in general<\/a> means that all of your imagination gets\u00a0to come to life [and] you can have as much fun as you possibly can.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
