Ridley Scott<\/strong> has got his new movie in the bag, with Apple Studios<\/strong> acquiring\u00a0Kitbag<\/em><\/strong>, a Napoleon Bonaparte epic set to star Joaquin Phoenix<\/strong> as the French emperor and military leader.<\/p>\n

Deadline reports that Apple has committed to finance and produce\u00a0Kitbag<\/em>, which is set to begin production in early 2022. The film, which\u00a0takes its title from the saying, \u201cThere is a general<\/a>\u2019s staff hidden in every soldier\u2019s kitbag,\u201d will star Phoenix hot off his Oscar win for his turn in 2019\u2019s\u00a0Joker<\/em>. Scott will direct the film, as well as produce alongside Kevin Walsh for Scott Free.
\nWe\u2019ve known about this Scott and Phoenix reteam (after collaborating in the Oscar-winning historical epic\u00a0Gladiator<\/em>) since October, but this news<\/a> is what gets the film off the ground. The film now has a\u00a0screenplay by David Scarpa, and a financier to make this Napoleon war epic happen \u2014 a dream that Scott can follow through after other great filmmakers, like the late Stanley Kubrick, famously failed to get made.<\/p>\n

\u201cNapoleon is a man I\u2019ve always been fascinated by,\u201d Scott told Deadline. \u201cHe came out of nowhere to rule everything \u2014 but all the while he was waging a romantic war with his adulterous wife Josephine. He conquered the world to try to win her love, and when he couldn\u2019t, he conquered it to destroy her, and destroyed himself in the process.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film is \u201can original and personal look at Napoleon\u2019s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine,\u201d per Deadline. The film will also portray Napoleon\u2019s most famous battle, as well as his \u201crelentless ambition and astounding strategic mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

And despite the polarizing reception to\u00a0Joker<\/em>, there\u2019s no question that Phoenix is one of the finest working actors today, impressing Scott with his ability to portray a ruthless leader in\u00a02000\u2019s\u00a0Gladiator<\/em>, in which he played cruel\u00a0Roman leader Commodus.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo actor could ever embody Napoleon like Joaquin,\u201d Scott said. \u201cHe created one of movie history\u2019s most complex Emperors in\u00a0Gladiator<\/em>, and we\u2019ll create another with his Napoleon. It\u2019s a brilliant script written by David Scarpa, and today there\u2019s no better partner than Apple to bring a story like this to a global audience.\u201d
\nKitbag<\/em> (which still retains its unfortunate title) is the latest big feature film commitment for Apple, which has been steadily acquiring major awards contenders for its streamer Apple TV+. It made a splash by acquiring the former theatrical release\u00a0Greyhound<\/em>, starring Tom Hanks, and has since released other critical darlings like\u00a0Sofia Coppola\u2019s\u00a0On The Rocks,<\/em> the documentary\u00a0Boys State<\/em>, and the animated\u00a0Wolfwalkers<\/em>. It\u2019s also got Martin Scorsese\u2019s pricey David Grann adaptation\u00a0Killers of the Flower Moon<\/em> on the way.<\/p>\n
