There are few working filmmakers today who can so perfectly capture that certain type of hyperverbal, self-loathing upper-middle class person, and\u00a0Noah Baumbach<\/strong> stands proudly within that echelon. The\u00a0Marriage Story<\/em> director is about to take on an adaptation of a novel full of those kinds of characters, with frequent collaborators\u00a0Greta Gerwig<\/strong> and\u00a0Adam Driver<\/strong> joining him to star in the feature.<\/p>\n

According to a Production Weekly listing (via\u00a0Jason Osia<\/a>\u00a0on Twitter<\/a>), Baumbach is set to direct a feature film adaptation of Don DeLillo\u2019s acclaimed 1985 novel\u00a0White Noise<\/strong><\/em>. Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig, reuniting with the director after two previous collaborations on\u00a0Frances Ha<\/em> and\u00a0The Meyerowitz Stories<\/em>, are set to star in the drama produced by Netflix. Shooting commences in June.
\nAn academic satire\/marriage comedy hailed as a classic of postmodern literature,\u00a0White Noise<\/em> tells the story of Jack Gladney (likely Driver\u2019s character), a professor of Hitler studies, and his wife Babette (again, likely Gerwig) as they navigate their family life with four \u201cultramodern\u201d children \u201cto the background babble of brand-name consumerism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here is the synopsis for the White Noise<\/em> novel\u00a0via Amazon:<\/p>\n

White Noise<\/i>\u00a0tells the story of Jack Gladney, his fourth wife, Babette, and four ultra\u00admodern offspring as they navigate the rocky passages of family life to the background babble of brand-name consumerism. When an industrial accident unleashes an \u201cairborne toxic event,\u201d a lethal black chemical cloud floats over their lives. The menacing cloud is a more urgent and visible version of the \u201cwhite noise\u201d engulfing the Gladneys-radio transmissions, sirens, microwaves, ultrasonic app<\/a>liances, and TV murmurings-pulsing with life, yet suggesting something ominous.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Michael Almereyda (Tesla<\/em>) previously planned to adapt\u00a0White Noise<\/em>, though that project fell through. DeLillo\u2019s works have never been adapted to the screen before, and as conceptual post-modern works, I can see why it would be difficult. Perhaps Baumbach, especially backed by the infinite cash machine that is Netflix, who have shown that they are willing to throw their support behind awards-darling directors like Baumbach, can overcome that difficulty.<\/p>\n

The premise of White Noise<\/em> also\u00a0sounds extremely rooted in the \u201980s culture of consumerism in which the novel\u00a0was first published, but I trust Baumbach will find a way to bring the story to modern day. And with the dream team of Baumbach\u2019s partner\/frequent co-writer Gerwig and Driver, who gave a career-best performance in Baumbach\u2019s last Netflix effort\u00a0Marriage Story<\/em>, how can you lose?
