Hotels want in on the nationwide vaccine rollout.<\/p>\n

The American Hotel & Lodging Association, the industry\u2019s largest trade group representing 3.2 million rooms, sent a letter to the Biden-Harris Transition Team on Thursday asking to be included in the US\u2019s COVID-19 vaccination rollout program.<\/p>\n

Touting its ability to quickly handle the flood of shots that need to be administered, the trade group noted that there are more than 50,000 hotels in each state located in cities, suburbs and rural areas.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy quickly mobilizing an existing network of sites, hotels can help strengthen the delivery and distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine in communities across the country to better streamline and build on current state efforts,\u201d AHLA CEO Chip Rogers wrote to Jeffrey Zients, Biden\u2019s incoming coronavirus coordinator.<\/p>\n

The US initiative, which currently includes drug chains like Walgreens and CVS, as well as big outdoor venues like Disneyland and Citi Field, has fallen short of its goals. The Trump administration vowed to vaccinate 20 million people by the end of 2020. But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that only about 9 million people have received their first dose, even as nearly 25.5 million doses have been distributed.<\/p>\n

\u201cHotels have existing infrastructure and operational capabilities to serve as vaccine administration sites,\u201d Rogers added. \u201cSince the start of the pandemic, our industry has been on the frontlines to support national public health and safety priorities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rogers\u2019 pitch includes the fact that hotels can provide private rooms and ballrooms as well as outside areas that could serve as 24\/7 facilities \u2014 similar to what the city announced this week regarding its deal with Citi Field, which is serving as a 24-hour vaccine mega-site later this month.<\/p>\n

Also in the hotels\u2019 favor are refrigeration capabilities, the Washington, DC-based group wrote.<\/p>\n

Early last year, AHLA launched the \u201cHospitality for Hope\u201d program, which opened over 20,000 hotels and a total of 2.3 million rooms as temporary housing for health care workers as the coronavirus pandemic hit the US.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough this program, the hotel industry has already successfully partnered with federal and local governments to provide assistance to those in need, including frontline and emergency workers as well as state and municipal public health departments,\u201d Rogers wrote.<\/p>\n

The hotel industry has been among the hardest hit by the pandemic as many properties have closed or are operating at anemic occupancy levels. Hotels lost about $80 billion in room revenue for the full year of 2020, according to Oxford Economics, a data research company. For the week ended Jan. 9, the US national occupancy rate was 37 percent compared with 52 percent a year ago.<\/p>\n

The letter was also sent to Gov. Andrew Cuomo in his capacity as chair of the National Governors Association.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
