NASA\u2019s\u00a0Curiosity rover just celebrated its 3,000th day on\u00a0Mars\u00a0by taking a remarkable picture of the Red Planet.<\/p>\n

The rover, which landed on the Martian surface on Aug. 6, 2012, took the image of the Gale Crater, including Mount Sharp, the massive mountain located inside the crater. In a statement accompanying the accomplishment, NASA said there were a \u201cseries<\/a> of rock \u2018benches’\u201d seen in the image that surprised scientists.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur science<\/a> team is excited to figure out how they formed and what they mean for the ancient environment within Gale,\u201d said Curiosity\u2019s project scientist, Ashwin Vasavada of NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in a\u00a0statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The panoramic image is the composite of 122 images that were taken on Nov. 18, 2020, the 2,946th sol (or day) on Mars. A Martian sol is slightly longer than a day on Earth, at 24 hours, 39 minutes.<\/p>\n

In August, the Curiosity Mars rover celebrated eight\u00a0years on the Red Planet. At the time, NASA\u00a0marked the achievement<\/a>, noting it had\u00a0travel<\/a>ed more than 14 miles at that point, drilling into 26 rock samples and collecting six samples of soil to determine that ancient Mars \u201cwas indeed suitable for life.\u201d<\/p>\n

The rover has made a number of discoveries during its time on Mars, including the\u00a0detection<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0an \u201cunusually high\u201d level of methane on the Red Planet.<\/p>\n

As of August 2019, scientists were still not sure what caused\u00a0the methane.\u00a0Some scientists\u00a0have ruled out<\/a>\u00a0that the spike was\u00a0caused by wind erosion of rocks that had trapp<\/a>ed the methane from fluid inclusions and fractures on the Red Planet\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n

On Earth, methane is produced both from biological and geological sources.<\/p>\n

In\u00a02018, NASA\u00a0revealed<\/a>\u00a0that the rover had found organic\u00a0molecules.<\/p>\n

In addition, the rover has taken a multitude of pictures of the planet, as well as\u00a0those<\/a>\u00a0of Earth and Venus from its vantage point. In August 2020,\u00a0the rover\u00a0spotted<\/a>\u00a0a dust devil traveling across the surface of\u00a0Mars<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Curiosity rover will be joined on the Red Planet by the\u00a0Mars<\/a>\u00a02020 Perseverance rover, which is\u00a0scheduled<\/a>\u00a0to land on Mars\u2019 Jezero Crater on Feb 18, 2021. The mission\u2019s duration on the Red Planet\u2019s surface is at least one Martian year or about 687 days.\n <\/div>\n
