“#Jake Tapp<\/a>er slammed for challenging veteran Rep. Mast’s patriotism<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

CNN anchor Jake Tapper has sparked intense fury for challenging the patriotism and loyalty of a Purple Heart Republican congressman who had his legs blown off while fighting for the US Army.<\/p>\n

Tapper disputed Rep. Brian Mast\u2019s commitment to democracy on Wednesday after the Florida lawmaker questioned whether any of the rioters who stormed the Capitol had confirmed that they did so at the behest of President Trump.<\/p>\n

The CNN host acknowledged that the Bronze Star Army vet \u201clost his legs \u2026 fighting for democracy abroad\u201d \u2014 before adding, \u201cAlthough I don\u2019t know about his commitment to it here in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

His remark soon went viral, with a clip shared by right-wing news site The Daily Caller <\/a>viewed more than 2.2 million times by Thursday.<\/p>\n

Mast \u2014 who lost both legs <\/a>after stepping on an improvised explosive device in 2010 while deployed in Afghanistan \u2014 was among those who retweeted the clip<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI lost two legs for @jaketapper\u2019s right to say whatever the hell he wants,\u201d wrote the vet, who has also been awarded the Army Commendation Medal for Valor.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut that free speech also protects the Republicans he is so eager to condemn for asking Constitutional questions about the election.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other vets were also quick to jump to Mast\u2019s defense, questioning the TV anchor\u2019s credentials for grilling a serviceman on patriotism and loyalty.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat sacrifices have you made for America?\u201d one Army vet, Jeremy Gilbert, asked <\/a>the host.<\/p>\n

\u201cBrian Mast is a distinguished veteran who sacrificed his flesh and blood for us. You can question his decision here, but not his commitment to our country,\u201d he insisted.<\/p>\n

Many also compared it to the outrage sparked last summer when Fox News<\/a> host Tucker Carlson called Sen. Tammy Duckworth<\/a> \u2014 another Purple Heart veteran who lost both legs in service overseas \u2014 a \u201ccoward\u201d for wanting to debate removing national statues.<\/p>\n

Despite the backlash, Tapper stuck to his guns.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re a hero for your service and I\u2019m grateful,\u201d the CNN star reporter wrote<\/a> in a reply to Mast\u2019s tweet. <\/p>\n

But \u201cyes I question the commitment to democracy of anyone who spread election lies, signed onto that deranged TX AG lawsuit, and voted to commit sedition.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were not just asking questions,\u201d he insisted of Mast\u2019s query during the House debate on impeachment.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
