{"id":155318,"date":"2021-01-14T18:35:00","date_gmt":"2021-01-14T15:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/nasa-mission-suggests-we-might-be-all-alone-in-the-universe\/"},"modified":"2021-01-14T18:35:00","modified_gmt":"2021-01-14T15:35:00","slug":"nasa-mission-suggests-we-might-be-all-alone-in-the-universe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/nasa-mission-suggests-we-might-be-all-alone-in-the-universe\/","title":{"rendered":"#NASA mission suggests we might be all alone in the universe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#NASA mission suggests we might be all alone in the universe<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/01\/galaxy-cluster-01.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A mission from\u00a0NASA\u00a0has discovered there may be a lot fewer galaxies\u00a0than initially believed, opening up the possibility humanity is alone\u00a0in the universe.<\/p>\n<p>The New Horizons mission,\u00a0which yielded the first\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/science\/nasa-spacecraft-flies-past-icy-planetary-object\">close-up photos of Pluto<\/a>, provided enough data for scientists to make the determination that it\u2019s likely the number of galaxies is in the hundreds of billions, rather than 2 trillion, as initially believed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an important number to know \u2014\u00a0how many galaxies are there?\u201d the study\u2019s lead author, Marc Postman, said in a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hubblesite.org\/contents\/news-releases\/2021\/news-2021-01\">statement<\/a>. \u201cWe simply don\u2019t see the light from 2 trillion galaxies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The findings, which were published and can be read\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/imgsrc.hubblesite.org\/hvi\/uploads\/science_paper\/file_attachment\/622\/2011.03052.pdf\">here<\/a>, are in stark contrast to the 2 trillion figure that had long been used, thanks to data from the Hubble\u00a0Space Telescope. Scientists used a mathematical model to determine that 90 percent of the galaxies in the universe were beyond Hubble\u2019s ability to see \u201cvisible light.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Travel<\/a>ing at roughly 33,000 miles per hour, the $720 million New Horizons spacecraft, which launched in January 2006, will eventually reach\u00a0interstellar space, like the Voyager\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/science\/nasa-voyager-enters-interstellar-space-could-become-the-only-trace-of-human-civilization\">probes<\/a>\u00a0before it. The fact that it is currently near the edge of the Solar System allows it to see ambient sky 10 times darker than the Hubble\u2019s vantage point.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese kinds of measurements are exceedingly difficult. A lot of people have tried to do this for a long time,\u201d the study\u2019s co-author, Tod Lauer, explained. \u201cNew Horizons provided us with a vantage point to measure the cosmic optical background better than anyone has been able to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The New Horizons spacecraft is now 4.4 billion miles from Earth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake all the galaxies Hubble can see, double that number and that\u2019s what we see \u2013 but nothing more,\u201d Lauer added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>NASA\u2019s James Webb Telescope, which had its launch pushed back because of the\u00a0coronavirus pandemic, could help scientists learn more about the faint glow in the background of space and learn if those are dwarf galaxies or something else.<\/p>\n<p>The New Horizons spacecraft has made a number of discoveries in recent memory, including the object\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/science\/nasa-renames-ultima-thule-nazi-controversy\">Arrokoth<\/a>, previously known as Ultima Thule. In May 2019, New Horizons discovered water and organic molecules on\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/science\/nasa-finds-water-organic-molecules-on-mysterious-ultima-thule\">Arrokoth<\/a>, which is deep within the so-called Kuiper Belt, or Twilight Zone, well beyond the orbit of Neptune.\n            <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
