“#NY water parks hung dry as owners question Cuomo why NJ, Conn. parks open<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n It\u2019s a real splash in the face.<\/p>\n

New York water park owners say it\u2019s not fair that they can\u2019t open for business anytime soon under the Cuomo administration\u2019s coronavirus reopening plan, yet their counterparts in neighboring New Jersey and Connecticut \u2014 the state\u2019s \u201cregional partners\u201d \u2014 have been given the green light.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow our neighbors in Connecticut 20 miles away are open, New Jersey is open \u2026 and Ohio is open and we\u2019re crushed right now in this state of limbo \u2014 with this much staff, this much capital outlay and no answers,\u201d Steve Turk, the owner and operator of SplashDown Beach Waterpark in Fishkill, NY, griped to The Post.<\/p>\n

The Cuomo administration broke the news<\/a> to local officials across the state in a conference call earlier this week that amusement parks and water parks, as well as gyms, shopping malls, and movie theaters won\u2019t be permitted to open in Phase Four \u2014 believed to be the final stage \u2014 of the state\u2019s reopening plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re an outside water park only, and it\u2019s a small park,\u201d said Turk, noting that he had hoped to have been open before Fourth of July weekend.<\/p>\n

Turk said it has taken \u201cseveral million dollars\u201d to get the water park \u201cwhere it is now,\u201d and feels he has been left in the dust.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is our life. This is our livelihood, and we\u2019re in pain. It\u2019s brutal,\u201d\u00a0Turk added.<\/p>\n

The water park\u2019s chief operating officer, Andrew Chafatelli said,\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019ve been on the phone every week, searching for answers and just haven\u2019t gotten them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBeaches can be open, pools can be open, zoos can be open, all these outdoor places can be, [and] we just are trying to understand what the difference in venue is,\u201d Chafatelli said as he explained that the park has suffered hundreds of thousands in lost revenue.<\/p>\n

Katie Wojdyla and her sister Kelly Greene, the owners and operators of the Enchanted Forest Water Safari Resort in upstate\u2019s Old Forge \u2014 a popular Adirondack town \u2014 were also among those proprietors dismayed by the news that they won\u2019t be allowed to open the park in the near future.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s extremely frustrating,\u201d said Wojdyla. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to open a water park in a regular year, and all of this on top of the COVID guidelines we\u2019ve been working on and the different aspects of our business outlooks for this summer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wojdyla called the news \u201cdisapp<\/a>ointing\u201d and said that she believes the water park can \u201csafely\u201d open up.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re an outdoor experience,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople coming in with families and travel<\/a>ing groups and it wouldn\u2019t be much different from going to a beach and experiencing the outdoors.\u201d<\/p>\n

New York GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik said that the decision by the state to not permit water parks to reopen under Cuomo\u2019s reopening plan \u201cis devastating for the North Country and for many of our tourism-based businesses and it is so integral to our summer economy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amusement parks and water parks were permitted to reopen in New Jersey on July 2 at limited capacity and in Connecticut on June 17.<\/p>\n

As the coronavirus crisis was mounting, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont shutdown businesses in conjunction across the tristate region.<\/p>\n

The three governors even previously teamed up in an attempt to form a \u201cregional\u201d approach to reopening from the coronavirus closures in the states.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are in constant consultation with our neighboring states, but ultimately each makes their own determination and right now, with infections skyrocketing across the country and clusters are forming around places where social<\/a> distancing is virtually impossible, we\u2019re not opening amusement parks, water parks, or any other place with the ability to draw large crowds,\u201d said Cuomo senior adviser Rich Azzopardi.<\/p>\n

\u201cBe smart, wash your hands and lastly wear a mask \u2014 which last I checked you can\u2019t really do on a waterslide,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
