Health care workers, first responders and the elderly are all in line to get the initial doses of the coronavirus vaccine first, but Charles Barkley offered a different idea Thursday.<\/p>\n

Barkley said during the \u201cNBA on TNT\u201d broadcast that pro athletes should get the first round of\u00a0the vaccine.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think they should let NBA players and coaches all get the vaccine,\u201d Barkley said. \u201cThat\u2019s just my personal opinion. We need 300 million shots. Give some thousand to NBA players \u2026 NFL players, hockey players \u2026 As much taxes as these players pay, let me repeat that, as much taxes as these players pay, they deserve some preferential treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n

His co-hosts Ernie Johnson and Kenny Smith didn\u2019t think that was a good idea. He didn\u2019t really find any people on his side of the argument on social media<\/a>, either.<\/p>\n

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver told NBA teams last month the league \u201cwould not jump the line\u201d to obtain the vaccines early, ESPN reported.<\/a><\/p>\n

The U.S. vaccine rollout was criticized by Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation\u2019s leading infectious disease expert, as being \u201ctoo rigid\u201d earlier this week \u2014 the same day the Trump administration moved to expand distribution efforts.<\/p>\n

Fauci, who noted that country faced \u201calmost an unprecedented challenge\u201d in rolling out the vaccine, said that while it was app<\/a>ropriate to get shots to priority groups such as health care workers and people who are in nursing homes, the country was \u201ctoo rigid in categorizing and classifying people,\u201d which prevented \u201cgetting the vaccine doses out in the most efficient matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said that while the U.S. is not \u201cabandoning the prioritization\u201d approach, it will move forward so that when people are ready to get vaccinated they can, which will also cut down on supplies sitting in freezers when \u201cthey could be getting into people\u2019s arms.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
