“#Bumble scraps political filter as users seek Capitol rioters<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The amateur sleuths searching\u00a0for\u00a0Capitol rioters\u00a0on Bumble can now get back to the hunt.<\/p>\n

The dating app<\/a> says it has restored a feature that lets users see potential matches with similar political leanings after taking it offline for two days to clamp\u00a0down on insurrectionists.<\/p>\n

The brief outage initially rankled users who saw the so-called politics filter as a tool to hunt down people who participated in the\u00a0Jan. 6 attack.<\/p>\n

But Bumble said it made the move after seeing a \u201cnoticeable uptick\u201d in users employing the filter in violation of its policies \u2014 including people who have used the app to \u201cspread insurrectionist content\u201d or attempted to \u201corganize and incite terrorism.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOn January 13, we took the action to temporarily remove our politics filter in an effort to prevent that kind of misuse and abuse while we took the steps necessary to ensure we had the proper moderation tools and protocols in place,\u201d a Bumble representative said Friday. \u201cHaving completed that process, the politics filter has been turned back on in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

The reversal came a day after Bumble confirmed on Twitter<\/a> that it had temporarily disabled the filter, leading some to wonder whether the Tinder rival was trying to prevent users from sniffing out the rioters.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Immigration attorney Allison Norris drew attention to the feature in\u00a0a\u00a0viral Twitter post<\/a>\u00a0last week, saying\u00a0a \u201cfriend of a friend\u201d had encountered some of the rioters after changing her political preference on Bumble to \u201cconservative.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s matching with MAGA bros and they\u2019re bragging and sending her pics and videos of them in the Capitol,\u201d Norris wrote. \u201cShe\u2019s sending them to the FBI.\u201d<\/p>\n

Norris\u2019 acquaintance wasn\u2019t alone \u2014 Alia Awadallah<\/a>, who works at Foreign Policy for America, tweeted that she found \u201cDOZENS of men\u201d on dating apps in Washington \u201cwho were clearly here for the insurrection attempt\u201d last week. She tweeted that she also submitted information to the FBI.<\/p>\n

But Bumble revealed<\/a> Thursday that it had removed the app\u2019s politics filter in the US for now in order to \u201cprevent misuse.\u201d The Tinder rival added that it\u2019s already taken its own steps to crack down on the rioters, including removing users who have been confirmed as participants in the Capitol attack.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn January 6, we immediately ensured that our hate speech scanning and protocols addressed the attack on the US Capitol and began removing any insurrection-related content from our platform,\u201d a Bumble rep said in a statement. \u201cIf we see anything that would suggest someone has or is in the process of committing a potentially criminal act we will take appropriate steps with law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n

The app\u2019s explanation didn\u2019t fly with some users.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow the f\u2013k is reporting insurrectionists misuse, Bumble?\u201d another person wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bumble did not say when the political filter will return or whether it considers searching for rioters a misuse of the feature.<\/p>\n

But the app\u2019s rep did note that it will be \u201cclosely monitoring\u201d all activity through Inauguration Day amid concerns about more violent protests.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere our AI technology<\/a> flags photos, hate symbols or text content that promotes the insurrection or related activities, those are removed, with repeated offenses or more extreme content resulting in a user being banned,\u201d the Bumble rep said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
