\n Sir Ian McKellen\u2019s show must go on.<\/p>\n

A new production of \u201cHamlet,\u201d starring the 81-year-old actor in the title role, will begin rehearsals Monday in Windsor, England, The Post has learned.<\/p>\n

It will be the first major play in the English-speaking world to get back to work in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

Put on by powerful producer Bill Kenwright, the age-defying Shakespeare show will begin performances at the Theatre Royal Windsor \u2014 steps from where Queen Elizabeth II is quarantined \u2014 on a date to be announced.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel lucky to be working again, thanks to Bill Kenwright\u2019s inspiring optimism and [director] Sean Mathias\u2019 invitation to re-examine \u2018Hamlet,\u2019 50 years on from my first go,\u201d McKellen said in a statement. \u201cSo now we will meet again. Don\u2019t know when but do know where \u2013 Theatre Royal Windsor!\u201d<\/p>\n

The rehearsals, Kenwright said, will strictly adhere to government guidelines on safety and social<\/a> distancing.<\/p>\n

Mathias, who directed McKellen and Patrick Stewart in 2013\u2019s \u201cWaiting for Godot\u201d and \u201cNo Man\u2019s Land\u201d on Broadway, said, \u201cThe disapp<\/a>ointment at being halted by COVID-19 has now been replaced with encouraging signs that we can at least start to work on these beautiful plays with an exceptional company.\u201d<\/p>\n

McKellen will be joined by Ben Allen, Emmanuella Cole, Alis Wyn Davies, Oli Higginson, Nick Howard-Brown, Jonathan Hyde, Asif Khan, Missy Malek and Jenny Seagrove.<\/p>\n

After \u201cHamlet,\u201d McKellen will take on the role of Firs in Anton Chekov\u2019s \u201cThe Cherry Orchard,\u201d also at the Theatre Royal Windsor.<\/p>\n

Broadway, meanwhile, has been shuttered since March 12, due to the pandemic, and is currently slated to be dark till Labor Day.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
