In a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click='{\"element\":\"ExternalLink\",\"outgoingURL\":\"https:\/\/www.cdcr.ca.gov\/news\/2021\/01\/17\/inmate-phillip-spector-dies-of-natural-causes\/\"}' href=\"https:\/\/www.cdcr.ca.gov\/news\/2021\/01\/17\/inmate-phillip-spector-dies-of-natural-causes\/\">post<\/a> on their website, the CDCR wrote that Spector \u201cwas pronounced deceased of natural causes\u201d yesterday (January 16), at an outside hospital. His official cause of death has not yet been confirmed. He was 81.<\/p>\n<p>Spector was behind several pop\u00a0singles in the early 1960s, including the Ronettes\u2019 \u201cBe My Baby,\u201d the Righteous Brothers\u2019 \u201cYou\u2019ve Lost That Lovin\u2019 Feeling,\u201d and the Crystals\u2019 \u201cDa Doo Ron Ron.\u201d By the 1970s, he earned a reputation as an eccentric who frequently carried guns. In 2003, Spector was arrested after actress Lana Clarkson\u2019s dead body was found in his mansion. In 2009, he was found guilty of second-degree murder. Spector\u00a0was in prison serving his 19-year sentence. He has resided in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation since June 5, 2009.<\/p>\n<div class=\"consumer-marketing-unit consumer-marketing-unit--article-mid-content consumer-marketing-unit--no-failsafe\" role=\"presentation\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<div class=\"consumer-marketing-unit__slot consumer-marketing-unit__slot--article-mid-content consumer-marketing-unit__slot--in-content\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"journey-unit\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Spector was born on December 26, 1940 in New York City. His family moved to Los Angeles in 1953. For a few months in the late 1950s, Spector worked as a court reporter\u2014the job didn\u2019t last long before he decided to work in the music industry. He was a back-up singer, guitarist, and songwriter for the Teddy Bears. He slept on the floor of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller&#8217;s office and shadowed their recording sessions. The two songwriters and producers introduced their prot\u00e9g\u00e9 to contacts in the Brill Building and the Atlantic Building.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cne-interlude-embed\"><\/div>\n<p>Though he\u2019d worked in the studio before, his first official production credit was for Ray Peterson\u2019s 1960 single \u201cCorinna, Corinna\u201d\u2014a top 10 hit as his first official outing. After working with vocalists like Curtis Lee, Bobby Darin, and Gene Pitney, he assumed that he could find success with an all-female vocal group, which were scarce at the time. In 1961, he co-founded Philles Records and began working with the Crystals who, a year later, scored a number one hit with \u201cHe\u2019s a Rebel.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--in-content\">\n<div class=\"ad__slot ad__slot--in-content\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Soon, he began working with writers Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry\u2014they co-wrote hits like \u201cDa Doo Ron Ron\u201d and \u201cBe My Baby.\u201d In 1963, he delivered the Christmas album\u00a0<em>A Christmas Gift to You from Philles Records<\/em>, which featured the Crystals, the Ronettes, Darlene Love, and others. His wall of sound production also backed\u00a0the Righteous Brothers\u2019 biggest hits (\u201cYou\u2019ve Lost That Lovin&#8217; Feeling\u201d and \u201cUnchained Melody.\u201d)<\/p>\n<div data-attr-viewport-monitor=\"inline-recirc\" class=\"inline-recirc-wrapper inline-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monitor-anchor\"><\/div>\n<p>He produced Ike &amp; Tina Turner\u2019s \u201cRiver Deep, Mountain High,\u201d and when it didn\u2019t become a major hit in the U.S., he became disillusioned and took a hiatus from music. \u201cI think when it came out, it was just like my farewell,\u201d he told\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click='{\"element\":\"ExternalLink\",\"outgoingURL\":\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/news\/the-rolling-stone-interview-phil-spector-19691101\"}' href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/news\/the-rolling-stone-interview-phil-spector-19691101\"><em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> in 1969. \u201cI&#8217;m still involved with why \u2018River Deep\u2019 wasn\u2019t a hit, and what the fuck was&#8230; am I that hated? Am I too paranoid?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By 1966, he was reclusive and paranoid. He married the Ronettes\u2019 Ronnie Spector and reportedly\u00a0kept her imprisoned in his mansion; she said he threatened to kill her if she left. In 1972, she escaped, running away from the house without shoes on. \u201cMy feet were all cut up, but I didn\u2019t care,\u201d she <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click='{\"element\":\"ExternalLink\",\"outgoingURL\":\"http:\/\/www.biography.com\/people\/phil-spector-9489973#trials-and-murder-conviction\"}' href=\"http:\/\/www.biography.com\/people\/phil-spector-9489973#trials-and-murder-conviction\">said<\/a>. \u201cI knew I would\u2019ve died there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of his most famous production came in 1970 when he produced John Lennon\u2019s <em>Plastic Ono Band<\/em>,\u00a0George Harrison\u2019s\u00a0<em>All Things Must Pass<\/em>, and the Beatles\u2019\u00a0<em>Let It Be<\/em>. In Harrison\u2019s liner notes for the 2001 reissue of\u00a0<em>All Things Must Pass<\/em>, he writes, \u201c[Spector] helped me so much to get this record made. In his company I came to realize the true value of the Hare Krishna mantra. God bless you Phil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 1979, Spector helmed the Ramones\u2019\u00a0<em>End of the Century<\/em><em>.<\/em>\u00a0Johnny Ramone described the album\u2019s sessions as contentious and arduous, claiming Spector made him play the opening chords to \u201cRock \u2018n\u2019 Roll High School\u201d repeatedly for nearly four hours. Dee Dee Ramone said\u00a0that Spector held him at gunpoint; Marky Ramone denied that ever h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Spector also allegedly fired a gun in the studio while working with Lennon. When Spector worked with Leonard Cohen on 1977\u2019s <em>Death of a Ladies Man<\/em>, he reportedly held a gun to Cohen\u2019s neck. Spector was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.<\/p>\n<p>In 2003, Spector was arrested after police found Clarkson\u2019s body in his Alhambra, California mansion. After the murder case was declared a mistrial in 2007, a retrial began one year later. In 2009, he was found guilty of second-degree murder and was sentenced to 19 years in\u00a0North Kern State Prison in California.
