It\u2019s all going south.<\/p>\n

A former head of New York state Democratic Party has already received his first dose of the coronavirus vaccine \u2014 no thanks to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.<\/p>\n

John Sullivan, who was co-chairman of the state party in the 1990s, was among the New York snowbirds to become eligible for the shot in Florida before Cuomo opened vaccination sites to senior citizens in the Empire State. <\/p>\n

\u201cI got the vaccine down here. I probably wouldn\u2019t have gotten it by now in New York,\u201d Sullivan, 73, told The Post on Sunday.<\/p>\n

The former upstate Oswego mayor \u2014 who worked for the Cuomo, David Paterson and Eliot Spitzer administrations \u2014 is still a legal New York resident but has been subleasing an apartment in St. Petersburg, Fla., since October, making him eligible to receive the shot there.<\/p>\n

DeSantis prioritized getting the vaccine to seniors in Florida and was one of the first governors to offer the shot to people age 65 and older.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think Florida is a leader in the nation in vaccinating seniors,\u201d said Sullivan, who got his first dose of the Pfizer vaccine last week and is scheduled for his second Feb. 3.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor as much as I disagree with Gov. DeSantis on other things, allowing senior citizens to get the vaccine right away was the right decision,\u201d Sullivan said. \u201cHe was right on. Who\u2019s dying out there? The people 65 and over.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sullivan said his old boss, Cuomo, was too slow to help the elderly.<\/p>\n

\u201cCuomo\u2019s call to vaccinate seniors came a week later. You know how many people\u00a0could\u00a0have been inoculated\u00a0in a week?\u201d Sullivan said.<\/p>\n

Cuomo initially restricted the vaccine to health workers. But after receiving heat, he extended eligibility to residents age 75 and over as well as\u00a0essential workers, before expanding the criteria a few days later to include everyone age 65 and over.<\/p>\n

\u201cHealthcare workers should be a priority to get the vaccine. But are they a priority over the most vulnerable senior population? Probably not,\u201d Sullivan said.<\/p>\n

And even though seniors are now eligible for the shot in New York, many of them are hitting a brick wall and can\u2019t schedule app<\/a>ointments because of a supply shortage and disorganized registration system, critics say.<\/p>\n

Sullivan said Cuomo showed strong leadership during the beginning of the crisis by providing information and calming a jittery public.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut as Kenny Rogers said, `You have to know when to hold \u2019em, know when to fold \u2019em.\u2019 You\u00a0have to know when to fold \u2019em and walk away,\u2019 \u201d Sullivan said, quoting the song \u201cThe Gambler\u201d by the country crooner.<\/p>\n

\u201cAndrew Cuomo can stay too long on the stage and be a micro-manager. There\u2019s the good Andrew and the bad Andrew.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cuomo\u2019s office Sunday defended the state\u2019s decision to offer shots first to healthcare workers.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur healthcare heroes carried this state on their backs through 10 months of COVID hell, and prioritizing them \u200ewas not only the science<\/a>-based CDC recommendation but was needed to make sure our hospital system doesn\u2019t get overwhelmed in the last leg of this pandemic,\u201d Cuomo spokesman Jack Sterne said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll stick with the scientists, and let the politicians and the tabloids deal with the politics \u2014 though anyone holding Florida up as a good example of anything during this pandemic needs to have their head examined.\u201d\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
